Variant Tournament

So strange seeing someone so desperate to try and lose sente

If it’s sente, that’s a shortcoming of the definition of sente. The victim is not controlling the game, the perpetrator is

Agreed. I know we often don’t focus on staying on topic around here, but maybe we can make an exception if someone’s is trying to organize a tournament in this thread?

Here’s my suggestion about the tournament setup:

  • MacMahon with handicap reduced by 2 (up to max. 9)
  • Free placement for handicap stones
  • 3 Rounds
  • Area scoring with 7.5 komi

Time control (depending on which option wins the poll):

  • Correspondence: Fischer 3d + 1d up to max. 7d
  • Live: Fischer 15m + 10s

Please let me know if you dislike (some of) these options.

PS: I just installed Christoph Gerlachs MacMahon matching program, and I love the mathematics behind it

To get people thinking, here are some asymmetric board proposals:

Chinese-opening inspired 19x19:

It seemed like playing on the 4-4, 4-3 etc. left corridors that were too tight to be interesting on such a big board, but I’m not really sure.

13x13 with tight corners:
[
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3],
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3],
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,0,3,3],

[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3],
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3],
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,0,3,3,3],

[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3],
[3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3]
]

If we want to explore tight corridors, and for quicker games.

Left-right mirroring is still possible to some extent here, but that’s much weaker, since there are 18 mirror-breaking points along the middle. One advantage of this board is that we have many opportunities to explore identical corner regions.

None of these really seems perfect to me; they are all kind of arbitrary.

Maybe a crazy idea, but we could let the players decide the board each time. For example:

  1. Black removes three points
  2. White removes two points
  3. Normal game begins, Black to play

With this sequence Black could easily choose to either allow or block mirror go.

I would prefer randomly selected holes and komi bidding.

According to Senseis Library there are different Komi bidding systems, which are you thinking of specifically?

Let’s not make it too complex to start with. If it is necessary it can always be implemented later.

Any reasonable system is fine. I would even be okay with 7.5 on all boards.
My main preference is randomly selected holes.

Which of these 6 board options do you prefer? (up to 3)

Sorry for the delay, I’ve been busy the last two weeks.

Here is my proposal:

Board: 19x19 with 5 random holes
Time control: Fischer 15m + 10s
Modus: MacMahon with handicap reduced by 2 up to max. 9, free placement (between 2 - 4 rounds)
Scoring: Area, 7.5 Komi

We play on https://www.govariants.com/ - the site is non-commercial and supports such custom boards. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to register an account.

Players are asked to communicate and schedule games with each other. I’ll post instructions on how to create games with these options and play on the govariants website.

To register, please also let me know your rank on OGS or an estimated rank.

Will the tournament begin before or after the new year ? ^^

How long will we have to play each round ?

(I imagine some will be rather busy with Christmas and the new year ?)

Yeah, lets start the tournament shortly after new years. If we want to set a time limit for each round, how about 1 month?

it sounds good to me ! ^^

@Atorrante @DoubleU @Sadaharu @Senffarbe Please vote in the poll above if you want to participate (I’m pinging you just in case you missed this).

I’ll just register first but no guarantees that I can make it

This is only necessary for small boards, with reverse or zero komi. If komi is positive, White wins. If the board is big enough, the strategy is easily countered.

huh? you’ve got it all backwards. Small boards are where mirroring doesn’t matter, and whether komi is positive or negative doesn’t matter, it only changes who is best positioned to start mirroring

Pretty sure that’s backwards, but okay.
