WeiqiHub - "Topics" section removed from the app!

Hey people, yesterday’s WeiqiHub update removed the Topics section from the app. It was one of the most organized collection of problems I’ve ever seen. Could someone who hasn’t updated the app yet please use an apk extractor and post the .apk from the last version? Thanks!

Perhaps better to continue here:

I don’t feel comfortable sharing the APK myself, but maybe someone else can help you there

That’s fine, I found an old version in a website and unfortunately it doesn’t work because it asks to install the app from the Play Store.

Can anyone share a screenshot or provide a description of what the removed Topics feature was like? I’m making a tsumego app later this year so I wonder if I have to change any of my features to avoid copyright issues too.

Here you go. However, I believe the copyright infringement threat is a head fake. I do not believe that a simple table of contents listing is protected creative work under intellectual property rights law. And as long as the exercises themselves are not still under copyright protection (from their original source) there’s no reliable claim of infringement.

101Weiqi threats are likely hollow. (Besides, their website isn’t in English so there’s a whole translation barrier to arguing an infringement, too.)

Disclosure: I am not an attorney though I have seen one on TV.

hahaha how the heck is that copyright infringement? I guess WeiqiHub copied the title of every category verbatim and/or all of the problems within them.

@shamisen At a minimum, it would seem that altering the titles (and order) of the sections would easily avoid any infringement legal exposure - if there even were one to begin with.

[And I’m also assuming the underlying puzzles/tsumego are not protected. Many such sources are likely old enough to have expired rights - and using modern tools to construct fresh puzzles shouldn’t be too difficult, either.]

My ideas are far from this, don’t worry. At least half of my tsumego will be original from my own games too, and the way I categorize them definitely would be different enough. I had a laugh because I was worrying for nothing.

And inside each category there’s a good amount of subcategories. For example, inside “Life & Death: basic”, you had exercises just for “Straight 3”, “Bent 3”, “Straight 4”, etc … inside beginner you found “Direction of Escape”, “Which stone should you capture”, something like that … the organization is amazing and even simple subcategories can get to a reasonable level of difficulty..

oh that’s closer to my idea actually. Now I’m back to worrying slightly. but I don’t mind cutting out some features out of my tsumego app as it’s not my main project anyway. And even if I have only original problems and fewer categories on it, I can teach a lot through it.

Such categories cannot be protected creative original works. They are simple generic descriptions in common use all over the world, appearing online and in countless books written over vast timeframes.

If they were indeed protected, no one else but the copyright owner could be using them currently. [Just look at https://senseis.xmp.net].

Not to worry - 101Weigi is full of themselves if this is indeed what they’re asserting.
