What happened to the leaderboard?

I remember OGS used to have a leaderboard but now I can’t find it anymore.

What happened to it?

Like this one?

That’s ladder.

Shit, yes you’re right.

Yes, and where’s the leaderboard?

Sounds like it was removed around 2022

Hmm I wonder why.

I think it will be a useful to keep people motivated in the game, especially if it contains other achievements as well (logging in daily, number of games played etc)

It seems to be a relatively popular opinion in the Forums that Leaderboards could either use improvement or be removed altogether. The major reasons being that:

  • The algorithm is opaque (it is documented in the FAQ, but it is not clear from page itself what is being reported)
  • The algorithm may not work as stated.
  • It is taking up valuable real-estate in the nav bar

Yeah I don’t think it’s much motivation to keep playing, any more than a ladder or collecting tournament icons on your profile page is.

There’s other board-gaming websites I can think of that provide achievements for different games for leaderboards but I don’t think it encourages the average player to play more necessarily. It’s more likely to encourage a certain type of player to find ways to game the system instead. If it rewards tournaments then maybe you make a bunch of short custom tournaments, if it’s like ladder placement or quick climbing, people find ways to do that that don’t really involve playing etc.

There’s probably other ways to encourage say daily tournament play by simply revamping the tournament system, changing the settings, or doing something promotional with the daily tournaments like having a stronger player review games live or on stream etc - some sort of regular promo like that.

I think just enabling higher tier AI review for those tournaments would boost participation

Using the “delete it and see how long it takes people to complain” method of feature value measurement, it scores poorly

The rationale is discussed in more detail in the GitHub issue. (which @godeon shared)

FWIW, @anoek expressed interest in bringing it back in some form. But the old one didn’t have any of the bells and whistles you suggested.

I’d like to have something like that that’s useful and interesting at some point, but that’d be revamping it anyways, not much use in saving the little ui bits we have now .
