My guiding light is the pursuit of efficiency - I try to not get drawn into situations where I might paint myself into a corner and have to respond aggressively - I’d rather allow mutual life than juggle 4 weak groups or get mired in tsumego in early Midgame
When it works, I win because I picked my battles wisely, and came out with an edge. When it doesn’t work, and I lose by komi-and-change - at least I can say I came close to cutting the board in half. And of course, there are all the times I just screw up and create too many weak groups - LOL
So… I wasn’t actually going to respond to this, but then I remembered I actually had something semi-relevant to add to the conversation.
A couple of months ago, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Discord group with a few other go players. They were all trying this thing out, where you upload a bunch of your SGF files to a program, and it would analyse your games and tell you about your games and what sort of style of play you had, using machine learning and whatever else… im not a tech bro nerd… not my thing, I’m more, anime and art, and whatever…just not my flavour of nerd… anyways, I got through the process of uploading like 19 games, because i couldnt be bothered with doing any more than that… and this was the result.
Sadly, the website that I did this on, is now, no longer operating. But I will share the link HERE, so that you can check it out, and see if any of you Tech nerds know if you can glean anything useful out of it for yourselves.
However, my actual opinion on this topic, from a general sense, is actually much more strongly aligned with @jlt.
In fact, I recently reiterated my opinions on “style of play” in another thread, here. And i very much stand by what I said there, and i think it very much feeds into what jlt is saying in that style is very much a matter of being a reflection of our understanding of the game. However, I take it a step further in suggesting that style is irrelevant until you possess an appropriate level of ability to make informed decisions.
