I think we understand well each other.
What I was meaning is that both are essential at a first basic level
1 read one move ahead
2 read something (play with the capture in mind)

I think I didn’t properly understand you before but I totally agree with what you just said ![]()
while both of you make what sounds like great advice - its all just theory type stuff,eg, thinking ahead one move, thinking while the others are playing their moves, very good advice for players that play and understand what their next move is doing on the board but iam a begineer and i have no idea after about move ten, when iam at 35 % down in score what to do to get back into the game i have tried just going for every corner then i tried blocking my oppoents moves then i tried snake top to bottom patterns nothing really works all my opponenets have counter measures sey up to stop me from doing what i want to do after about move ten – and thinking about it just does no good slow play does nothing either - i guess iam asking for a step by step way to get started before i get tooo frustrated and go back to chess. i tried all the mentioned apps that say they teach you but all they give is puzzles that only let you proceed when you put the stones down they way they want you to put the stones down. After an hour of puzzle frustration, i usually give up The only thing I play now is 3-day games, which seems to help in the frustration factor i will keep going setting myself a goal of trying to stem off the 35 % score rate from my opponent as long as possible, trying to get it from 15 moves to 20 moves to 25 moves etc etc
You don’t think when playing chess?
Note: When I asked @NEWOLDGUY not to use ALLCAPS, he said that he had poor eyesight (no pun intended) and that it made it easier for him … the game is public, so I take liberty to carry this here, for all our understanding.
So, if on a desktop or laptop computer with Windows, you should try the key combo ctrl+plus, or on a Mac cmd+plus to enlargen everything on the screen.
Well. My suggestion was to first play through all available interactive tutorials.
Did you do that? If not, then for heaven’s sake, please do that!
Just look at this last game we played:
You resigned a game that you were winning!
And please also look at my “Malkovich Log” comments (underlayed with green) that you can see now that the game is over. I hope you can learn something from them … not much, admitted, but just some ideas.
and also, there’s no need to remember how man times you’ve done that: The corresponding
one of ctrl+zero , cmd+zero will bring the window back to its default zoom level.
thanks for the info, i will use a mag lens on my face screen that i use for reading books with small type, and try to use small caps that everyone here wants me to use , i have no computer skills what so ever.. i am an old sick retired pensioner just waiting for the door to open and also maybe see if i can understand this game – before i go in, this looks very very doubtful mind you but thanks for the info might help some one else.
This is not “just theory”.
It is really the only way you can play.
It is “how one plays a board game”.
Thinking ahead one move is absolutely necessary.
“If I place this stone here, can it be immediately taken?”
It seems obvious that you must ask this question.
If you know the answer is “It can’t be taken” then you have thought ahead one move.
Your play shows that you do ask this question.
So then you just have to also ask “can it be taken after my opponent plays next?”
“What will my opponent do to take this?”
If you can’t say to yourself “what will the board look like after I play this move” then your moves will be basically random, and you will win 50% of your games against other players like this, and no games against anyone else.
Also, there is no other help you can receive, if you can’t do this.
Every piece of advice you receive assumes you are doing this.
If you’re going to work on one thing to improve your chance of winning, this is the first and only thing to start with, until you “got it”.
(IMO)
What can you do to make a start?
USE THE ANALYSIS TOOL.
It means: click your move onto the board without submitting it and look what it looks like. Then click your guess at the opponent’s move. What does that look like?
Let us know if you need help setting up so that you can use “Analysis mode”.
Here is an example from one of your games:
It’s your turn:
You think about playing here:
Looks safe, right? Can’t be taken immediately, yay. What will you opponent do?
Let’s see, how about this?
Oh, he can threaten to take!! Can I escape?
Nice! I can escape, this move might be OK! But what else can he do?
Oh! He can trap me this way! Can I escape?
Yes I can, is this OK?
I wonder what you think, NEWOLDGUY, about this position? Is it OK?
If you can read to this point, now you have a chance of learning more.
This seems "long" in a post, but really it's a few clicks on the board in the analysis tool, to help you see what is coming in your game.I hope it shows you what we really mean by “think about your next move, and ask what will happen next”.
It’s not “theory” it is “the actual practice that we all do”.
which is why @hoctaph and others, including myself are giving you hints … with how to use OGS, how to use your computer, how to play Go ![]()
FYI: Sick old retired pensioner here also, for heaven’s sake, not kidding you! Sometimes it feels as if half of us here are sick old retired pensioners ![]()
And forget that face screen at the computer and instead press CTRL+PLUS on Windows or CMD+PLUS on a Mac. Note that these commands, including CTRL/CMD+ZERO for resetting the size only apply to the front browser tab.
I’m old. Only old.
Well that was a lot of ideas to think about. Your screenshots made me think alittle about next moves, but i have no idea how to use any of the features which you say to use, and anyway, wouldn’t that be cheating to use a program to see what happens next didn’t know every one here as you say is old sick retired thought most where just kids at least under 75 years old and yes sometimes my meds make me think and say stupid things, i appollgize for that and i do complain a little to much about not getting this game even at a starters level - i will try to correct that less is beat, maybe its just to hard a game for a simple old retired sick ready to go man like myself and i should just stick to chess and poker to play while online – just thought it was a interesting game to learn maybe one last kick at the can thing since i had to give up sailing recently thans for the hit on the knoggan to set me straight
