What’s your answer? Perhaps it will be more educational if you try to reason it out yourself first.
If you don’t know where to start, do you have some idea which stones can be removed from the board?
My answer is Black.
I think Black got 3,white 0.
BUT answer is White,i don’t the reason
Which stones are safe? Which stones are doomed?
Remember the previous lesson (3.19) hints
How many points is each color’s territory? Note: a dead stone counts for two.
I want to know how many points each of the two colors scored.
Have you finish 3.19 problems and did you get all of them right?
And I see you finish the previous questions, what were your counts to the 3.20 question 4
Black:20 white:25
So you know the break down and which black and white stones are dead, two black on the upper left, and 1 white on the lower left.
And then white has 4 on the upper left, 1 in the center, 16 on the lower right = 21, while black has 12 on the upper right, and 6 on the lower left = 18.
Total white has 2 captive black and the territory below them = 2 x 2 = 4, plus 21 equal to 25.
Total black has 1 captive, and the territory below, = 1 x 2 = 2, plus 18 equal to 20.
Any questions with the above process?
If not, apply all the steps to your question 11 (answer each step separately)
- which stones on both sides are dead
- count the territory beside those for each side
- add them up and compare
black=2x5+7=17
white=2x4+16=24
right?
Okay, I think I see the problem. You are not removing stones from the board.
Consider this - in both examples, there are stones which cannot survive if the players continue. For instance, do you see how black can capture a white stone here?
If you happen to like videos, here is a section on scoring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUU1wZHnb5A Notice the first thing he does is to remove 2 white stones from the board.
Yes, you got it. ![]()

thanks
Thank you for your suggestion, the video was very helpful to me, I will follow this blogger.
What if white plays b2?
Glad you noticed it, what do you think, how can black respond, or does black have to respond? Would it change the result of the game? change who win the game?
The white stones in that area can no longer live, so even playing at b2 won’t change that.
I don’t know how far along you are in the lessons, but you need to know about capturing race, seki (mutual life), and maybe ko to understand the situation when black passes and white plays B2 in the 3.20 question 4.
It’s a bit advanced if you just started to learn life and death,
