Want a quick crash course in the top rated players of current professional Go?
Here are the biggest dogs on the block, according to Go Ratings. Each name is linked to a Sensei’s Library article.
The point is not to argue over whether player #1 is really better than #2, but rather to become aware of the existence of both players and their accomplishments.
Looks like this was created around 17 Apr., 2022, for anyone from the future wanting a look into the past status of top professionals of different countries. (@bugcat I would welcome a more accurate date if you have one)
Time for the most obscure category: female players of the Kansai Ki-in. The tenth highest rated female Kansai K. player is ranked #857 of the 903 professionals Go Ratings tracks.
Still 20th April.
Warning: some of these articles are amongst the lowest-effort on Sensei’s. I made those sloppy articles, so I can say that.
Last time I checked, Yamashita Keigo (44 yo) was the top rated player at / over forty, and he also seemed to be backing that status up with good tournament results. Right now he’s #102.
The other big players of 2000s Japan: Cho U (#109, 42 yo) and Takao Shinji (#111, 46 yo) aren’t far behind him.
Let’s finally try to list the top ten highest rated players at or over forty years old.
Just as none of the top ten 30+ pros are over 40, none of the top ten 40+ pros are over 50.
So who is the top rated 50+ player? Either Cho Hunhyun or someone rated above him, in the current range #174 to #251. It’s probably Cho: the obvious suspects are all ranked below him. I’m not going to try to make a 50+ list, since the workload would be too large with my current methods.
April 23 UK time.
Yamashita Keigo
(hon. mention to Gu Li, 40 next February, currently slightly above Yamashita)
(hon. mention to Lee Sedol, retired, 40 next March)
Cho U
Takao Shinji
(hon. mention to Cho Hanseung, 40 in November)
