My opponent timed out from what may have been a losing position (or maybe not, I’m a 14 kyu). Rather than give me the win, the game was annulled. Why?!?!
My opponent may have been off the server, and lost many correspondence games at once, but why does my 2 months of investment in the game not count for anything in this decision?
I too was once affected by something similar. They call it “rank protection system”. I too would rejoice if a fairer way to deal with it was implemented.
Is the serial correspondence timeout annul still a thing? I thought it was dropped when auto-vacation came in. Given the downsides of auto-vacation, if it doesn’t have the upside of meaning serial correspondence timeout annul is gone then I have an even more dismal view of it.
I think serial timeout is still a thing, but iirc it was altered at one point (prior to auto vacation) to mark games as a loss if the person was clearly losing, but otherwise annul. I don’t know what the exact criteria was for it to be considered a clearly losing position.
Unless I am vastly mistaken or something changed recently, the current system for correspondence works as follows:
If the player who is timing out was losing the game (according to AI), it will count as a win for the opponent (to stay relatively fair)
If the player who is timing out was winning the game, it will be annulled (to protect the rating from “undeserved” big boosts.
If the game is still too early or very balanced, I THINK that’s also annull, not completely sure about the edge cases now though
In your case @jimpax as far as the AI is concerned you were quite a lot behind, hence the annull. Presuming I found the correct game, but it seems probable
Perhaps against a perfect opponent I was down, but I was in the process of isolating a large group of his with no eyes. I’m sure a SDK or Dan player would have easily escaped my plans, but this was a DDK match up.
In any case, time is part of the game. I don’t understand the point of a clock if games can just be annulled because the opponent can’t mange multiple clocks and times out of all of them. This is ridiculous.
FYI this may seem ridiculous at first encounter, but is is an ongoing challenge to resolve.
How do you propose to deal in a non-ridiculous way with the rank-destruction of a person with multiple correspondence games who has a RL event or simply abandons OGS?
Before you answer, you might want to scan the forum for the previous debates on this, because the situation that we have right now is the result of endless and ongoing attempts to find the right line…
Dang, we could do with an FAQ to point to on this topic!
It’s funny how we hear people moaning about losing points when their win on a correspondence timeout was annulled, but we never hear people moaning about the un-earned gain of ranking points in the same scenario
Note: I truly hate the experience of annulled-due-to-mass-timeout as well. I also truly can’t think of a better solution right now.
In those threads you will find my proposal for how to better deal with it, which I believe is an even stronger proposition now that some of the arguments against it are voided by changes since then of rating the games the serial timeouter was losing and auto vacation.
