As a low rated player I would like to search for games with stronger players so that I can connect, play with and learn from stronger players? However I see that I can only match with someone ~10 ranks lower than me. It would also be easier to find a game if I could widen the search space. Is this possible?
I think this use case was supported on KGS via the, Teaching Ladder, Beginner, etc (Room).
OGS does not have the same functionality as rooms at the moment.
I think the current ‘solution’ is to have lots of friends on the suitable timezone + challenge an online one + specify on the message the type of game you are proposing.
Speculating what OGS would need to have this:
Have another Tab next to Watch named ?Match/?Join where you would see a table with all public proposed games a la KGS with the message that says what type of game you are expecting whenever you match the requester conditions. If this table would be filterable by Group then they could be playing the role of rooms.
This can also be implemented as a table in each group. This would then make them more like Rooms. Perhaps easier.
!! I see there is an option Explore Custom Games in the Play. And maybe the game name can play the role of the message. Just learning about this. A pity that is not more front facing.
~~I can be wrong but I think right now the only way to broadcast a proposed game is through the auto-match and then you are restricted to some ranks. I guess to avoid sandbagging.~~
I see, just wondering what the reason is for not allowing to search for lower ranks. Isn’t it true that beating someone much lower rated than you won’t improve your rank much if at all?
I would recommend to join a Group. They are probably the equivalent of “rooms” on other servers. There are groups for all sorts: beginners, intermediate, advanced, fast correspondence players, slow, and so on.
Another possibility is to join a Tournament. There are rank brackets and also as they as scheduled in advance, even if not restricted to a specific rank, you can see the ranks of those signed up, and decide.
