I’m confused as to why the answer is 3 when neither side has captured stones at A as far as I can tell.
If white plays at A white gets 3 points. If black plays A white doesn’t get those 3 points.

If white plays A, white gets 2 points of territory in the corner + 1 point at F1
If black plays A, white doesnt get any points in the corner, and they have to connect the clumpy group of stones at F1
So the main idea is about how that small territory in the corner allows white to omit playing F1 later on

Playing at A changes the outcome of White’s territory in the 3 points marked in turquoise-blue :
(when White plays A, they are surrounded as territory;
when Black plays A, they become neutral points + White will eventually need to connect at the right-most turquoise-blue marked point, when Black has filled the other 2 neutral points.).
