Wordle 234 4/6
I don’t think I like Nerdle.
I don’t really like that the answer can be commutative and associative in its operations but the order matters.
Like having to figure out that x+2+y = … is wrong, not because your sum is wrong but because the 2 is in the wrong place seems needlessly tedious. If those were three distinct numbers, as opposed to two in todays solution, that’s already 6 possible combinations just rearranging the additions. You’d have to guess everything right on the first guess just to guarantee to solve it.
And while they say
As far as we can work out, there are over 100,000 valid words but we have chosen 17,723 valid “words” as there are quite a lot we thought you wouldn’t like. We think it’s just as fun playing with numbers as playing with letters. See if you agree!
I just have to take their word for it that they didn’t pick something silly, like a case like that above
I guess it’s interesting that one can arrive at the solution in a handful of guesses but I don’t really get the feeling I want to play it again.
Yup, but it’s hard to eliminate this without making the rules unnecessarily complex, I think.
A couple of days ago the puzzle was something like 10-5-2=3, but I first guessed 10-2-3=5 and 10-5-3=2:
However, this is the same with wordle, where you can have a word like “ho…es” and only two guesses remaining, with the possibilities “hopes”, “holes” and “homes” still open. You could try each of them and be annoyed when it takes long, or instead ask a prompt that is wrong, but decides your word for you, like “lamps”.
The annoying part only comes from trying to solve the puzzle with only valid solutions (hard mode, so to say), instead of as efficiently as possible.
For some reason, maybe the way the link is formatted, I imagined clicking it and being able to play an old one.
Except it was today’s one again and it took me two guesses to notice. But even remembering the solution it was still 50/50 if I’d get it right because of that ordering stuff.
It’s not quite as bad as I made out either, since you get information with each guess, even a wrong guess of a permutation might have a number in the right spot.
You can play older challenges by adding the date to the link: https://nerdlegame.com/20220204 is the one I mentioned.
About commutativity, their FAQ addresses it:
We get it. 1+2 and 2+1 are effectively the same in maths because of a principle called ‘commutativity’. In the same way, 3*4 = 4*3.
However in Nerdle, the only perfectly correct answer is the one we’re looking for, in the order we have it. So if our answer contains 1+2, we won’t accept 2+1.
We’ve spent hours playing with alternative commutative-friendly rules that would allow both 1+2 and 2+1. But so far, every variant we’ve tried is simply not as fun to play.
If you feel the commutativity challenge costs you an extra attempt at a Nerdle challenge unfairly, you can always delete one line from your game emojis before you share them. We won’t tell anyone, promise.
I personally suggest also editing the “4/6” to “3/6” when deleting a line, though
Lol.
At that point I don’t even need to play the game I’ll just share the emojis
But yeah that’d be a giveaway.
This one seemed to be #16 for me. Didn’t even think about multiplication by 1 (or addition of 0)
I mean I totally got

You can also have leading zeros in front of digits.
Just don’t divide by zero, or your web browser crashes.
I would be curious if a kind of cross between Nerdle and that Countdown numbers game would be fun.
I was never very good at that numbers game (basically you get like 6 numbers and a target number to make using arithmetic but using each number once)
eg random episode with the numbers part on YouTube.
I wonder could one have a cross between thats style of thing with some hints if you get it incorrect, possibly intentionally.
A lot of the time there would be several ways of getting a solution, but I wonder could one guide a person to the closest match to their guess, highlight numbers used (not all numbers need to be used), symbols used unused etc in a similar way to Nerdle.
Still it might not be fun at the end of it even if one could
That one actually makes me sad if that’s the answer to some of them.

Hm, I’m not really in the mood for all this Wordle-stuff today.
Inputs like 0 0 = 0 0 0 0 0
are considered valid. I hope that none of the solutions are like that.

I’ve had that for two days now. It is fun for a bit, but it becomes a chore sooner or later.
Inputs like
0 0 = 0 0 0 0 0
are considered valid. I hope that none of the solutions are like that.
Yeah, these are not among the solution. Solutions won’t have leading zeroes, the right hand side will never contain operators, and there are no “negative numbers” (e.g. -3 * -4 = 12 is accepted, but won’t be an answer)
I feel like it would be a chore to always play every different variant that I can, but each day I just play the ones that I feel like doing, and maybe some new ones that I find funny or interesting.
The only one I feel like I really want to do every day is the original. The others I’m fine with skipping if I don’t have the time, don’t feel like doing, or forget to think of it.
I think the crosswordle one is interesting. It’s kind of funny that they named it that and also market it as Sudoku meets Wordle, since I think it’s only vaguely related to either. However, it’s still a good a marketing idea and I found it because I searched for a combination of Sudoku and Wordle. I think it’s better described as reverse Wordle.
I mean, I found the original annoying today and then stopped
I agree, very annoying today
Wordle 235 6/6
I messed up putting the same letter in the same spot for the first two guesses.

So you’ve got me doing this now. But I’m not going to get sucked into the others!
What is the safe time to discuss wordles btw? Is it midday GMT the next day?

I can hardly remember what I even played yesterday. You can always use the hide details feature to just discuss it now.
