Yet another Go Server

I remember when CGS - Color Go Server was and people genuinely thought it would attract new players based on their pretty interface, but it didn’t seem to pan out (I mean it is still online, just really not many players using it, and it was pretty much fully matured, not just ideas at that time).

I think the CGS concept was good, just probably not very well implemented

CGS looks like it is built for mobile, but doesn’t have a mobile client, and performance running on mobile browsers (or even no hardware acceleration in normal browsers) is questionable. CGS might have been good if it started with dedicated clients/apps, instead of trying to be browser-based considering all the fancy graphics and interfaces. The resources and functions of CGS are quite complete, and good ideas might just come down to how well they can be implemented.

Thanks to USB-C, this joke aged terribly  we FINALLY won something!

Whenever I see a device that only supports micro-USB or USB A, I start cursing. And I have many of them :joy:

We are talking about interface and hardware, instead of software and services. And USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and is intended as universal and unified to begin with (hence inherently manufacturers and users expect them to be unified). Go servers and services are more like OSs or media services like Netflix, which has more do to with market competition to determine if there can be monopolies than interfaces.

Big killer for me, was that it wasn’t well optimised. It would nearly melt my laptop just trying to open it.

Probably because it was built with some kind of bloated game engine initially anyway.

I don’t know the story of the origins of Color Go Server, but I wonder if it was a person who wanted to make something in Unity and then decided to make a go server, rather than someone who wanted to make a go server and then looked for an appropriate technology to do so.

Curious about what the reason OGS isn’t more popular is? Do you mean because there’s a limited player base in the West, or something else?

2025, the year of the Go servers

Yes, the western player base is extremely limited and that will not change anytime soon as it seems. I think that OGS has been focusing too much on the western audience in the past, while the vast vast majority of players is based in the far east. There is not much potential for OGS to gain anything from being even greater for western players, since it already is the main western Baduk server. The big potential that OGS has is to attract the far eastern players. I’m not saying that this is an easy task to undertake but I think this is the direction that OGS should take.

There is nothing wrong whatsoever with OGS being a West-centered server. There is no reason for why a Western server should cater to East Asians, more so given that East Asian servers do not cater to Westerners.

As you know, that is the direction OGS wants to take. The question remains: how.

  1. There are plenty of reasons, some of them have been named already.
  2. I’m personally not a big fan of calling OGS a “western server” since I feel like it is meant to be a home for all international Baduk players but of course I cannot speak for the project.
  3. Just because someone else isn’t doing something doesn’t mean that neither should you. I think it would be great if OGS could become that holistic Baduk server that encompasses all aspects of Baduk and all languages, and unites players worldwide.

I’d love to propose some bad ideas again that get Samraku all riled up. But I’m immensely busy with other stuff currently. Hope I’ll find some time for this soon.

There’s a bit of an asymmetry in that CJK countries have a much higher Go population than the rest of the world combined.

So a Chinese server has much less to gain from internationalization than an American server.

Uh, another challanger has appeared.
This time with an actual working project and some new interesting features like achivements, 3D Goban, a social media feed, tutorial videos and more.

Beat me to it, thanks
