2023: “Things change, and they don’t change back.”

Where is the option “i don’t care”?“i don’t have any idea” or “i prefer to follow the herd”

Ya know the (relative) proximity to the end can make older more inclined to talk about it, but that doesn’t induce that youngers will be more interested in it.

I don’t mean to say that any particular thread is “gloomy”, and was just borrowing that word from you. I think each of these are quite complex and beyond the characterization of a single word. I just meant to say that we are not necessarily beholden to past traditions as to how future discussions may arise or be organized.

Is it really necessary to close this thread, or any of the older “year” threads? I think we can just let things happen organically, rather than constraining people to use one thread vs another.

Going further, I don’t see that we necessarily must have only one sort of general discussion thread per year. Perhaps some people want to have different threads expressing different sorts of attitudes and thoughts about the current year or other time period. I think that competing opinions are fine to have.

I saw that you recently bumped and then closed the 2022 thread. I think that both actions were unnecessary (but not too bad to do, so please don’t see this as some sort of harsh criticism, but rather just some recommendations):

  1. The thread was already abandoned and unused, so there was not much need to do anything at all about it.
  2. It is possible that someone later might want to reply to an old discussion from that thread. Although the thread is dated with a year, it’s not a bad thing if someone wanted to simply reply there, in order to add to some discussion that was made there. Of course, a workaround would be to reply elsewhere (maybe by making a new thread or posting the reply in another thread while quoting a post from the closed thread), but these workarounds might not be so clear to some users and the thread being closed might seem to discourage revisiting topics expressed there.

Maybe we could go to some ritualization. Have an annual meeting on this “year thread” some retrospective like the “5 best (and worse) between thosee 1263”, have a quiz, have polls and pedantic linguistic arguments, have a go tournament (let’s not forget that) and say one time thanks to everyone. Ok I am bit late i know.

OK @yebellz, you convinced me, and I re-opened that 2022 thread.

Sometimes I may be overly obsessed with things being “orderly”¹ (definitely is the case with closing Dame points, for example). So … I will watch myself a little better in future, thanks.

I’ve also closed that poll as you convinced me that it is nonsensical.

¹ And of course, and admittedly, what one perceives as “orderly” is a very subjective thing.

Well, in the first place it means that the probability is high that one has seen many more “ends” than younger ones.

Mh… I get that, but I want to mention that quite a few people affected by the aforementioned “ends” that I witnessed were, sadly, younger than me, some were MUCH younger, so, IMHO, this is a topic that should interest every person above a certain age, maybe 15 or 16 or so. But sure, nothing that should be forced upon anyone.
