2026 Go Resolutions

With less than two weeks left I want a thread to share our new year resolutions related to go.

Also check out what you wished for this year and maybe report back.

I’ll start:

  1. Get half a stone stronger and reach 1d EGF this way
  2. get 100/100 in 6k guan
  3. publish two website/software reviews in a Go magazine
  4. get 6 new people to join the club meetings
  5. organize 3 one day tournaments
  6. spend at least 5% of go time for teaching
  7. don’t buy new go equipment, books are ok
  8. publish Go videos in german on YouTube
  9. try to enjoy every game

About my last year’s resolutions: I did read the books as planned, however I’m not sure I remember a lot.

My 2026 resolutions:

  • Study josekis, and hopefully gain one half stone (however even if I do, I’d still be 1k EGF).
  • Add 1000 problems to my training collection on AI Sensei.

Last year was a massive failure on those goals.
I did manage to finally play my first real life Go games and had quite a lot of fun with sideseki and square fuseki, but those goals remain for 2026 since overworking myself led to my “free time to typeset” to evaporate to almost zero… I am very dissappointed of this bad result. This year I shall achieve at least more time to do the typesetting work.

Resolutions? Yes. Go resolutions? No.

Regain my old 8-7k rank after almost abandoning Go for two years. And this time get to the end of Lessons in the fundamentals of Go.

First I hope to have still enough time and energy for sharing my weiqi passion
Then I hope to keep alive and growing our new IRL club. Would be marvelous if we reach to organize a go tournament.

I have only met 1 of my old go friends, the ones I had before my expatriation to China. So I deeply wish to meet some of them again after those many years.

Finally I hope to stay able to play, commiting less horrible blunders and giving some pleasure for my opponent to play with me.

Teach my elder daughter (turning 5 in summer 2026) the capture rule and play a game of capture go. She’s got black and white taking turns and the stones (mostly) going on the lines so far.

Try using squares, I find this really helps kids and beginners understand edges are liberties or I call them life lines

Another way is to call those lines as “whiskers” and say that stones will wind up either saved or shaved.

Or, you could even put the stones inside the squares…
