Are you worried about coronavirus?

In the Netherlands, even after a month of decreasing dayly infections, the lockdown was aggravated to minimize the number of infected people before the more infectious variants become dominant.

This is a projection of what’s coming:

from the web site of the public broadcasting service (NOS), based on a consultation with the head modeller of the national institute for public health (RIVM).

Seems wise. After three weeks of lockdown here it’s not clear that the current rules are as effective as necessary.

Here in Berlin, one hospital has been quarantined as a whole, because the UK variant has been spreading there.

Honestly, I think it’s already too late in many countries to stop this new variant.

It possibly was too late already when it was first discovered in the UK.

The real problem being of course, if there is a lot of contact between two species where one of them often carries a virus, it’s bound to jump from one species to the other after mutating to make humans more susceptible to the virus. In most developed countries, due to proper hygiene such contacts are kept at a minimum. Hence dangerous mutations are very rare here.

Oh wait, I’m talking like it’s January 2020, I mean:

The real problem being of course, if there is a lot of contact between people, where a large part of them carries a virus, it’s bound to spread through the population faster after mutating to make humans more susceptible to the virus. In most developed countries, due to the spread of fake news people are quite bad at just sitting at home to stop the virus from multiplying. Thus dangerous mutations are to be expected here.

Also airports seem to be a bit of a joke.

Blocking air-travel and enforcing social distancing even in airports should’ve probably be done to stop the variant much earlier on.

I think Ireland has also been very poor at enforcing self isolation when you enter the country. So many issues really.

I’m afraid you’re right.

Which begs the question, can someone be ill from both strains at the same time? I do not see why not, but it really makes you wonder what are the side-effects of that.

That’s Netherlands? The hell you guys are doing over there?

Yes, there are some riots yesterday and today after installing a curfew from 21:00 - 04:30.

This is from 30 minutes ago (so after the curfew started): Relschoppers stichten brand in Haagse Schilderswijk | NU - Het laatste nieuws het eerst op NU.nl

Also there are satirical videos made about it. Thie next one is about the town Urk (a former island with a very religious conservative population and issues with drugs and rioting) where a corona testing location was set on fire by rioters: The URK Dutch Anarchy Demonstratie 24/01/2021 - YouTube :stuck_out_tongue:

But the vast majority adheres to the curfew. Apparently streets are mostly deserted after 21:00: Verschil voor en na avondklok: niet uitgestorven, wel rustiger | NU - Het laatste nieuws het eerst op NU.nl

Should be said, that protests of any kind are almost always allowed in the Netherlands as long as they are registered beforehand, peaceful and follow the corona restrictions. These protest were neither of those: organised on the fly, attracted rioters and did not adhere to social distancing / curfew.

Ufufu, even in Netherlands police is fond of cracking some heads, we all aren’t too different after all.

It works two ways, the protesters weren’t very peaceful either. The video above doesn’t show that side of the story, though.

I think riot police tend to be not so gentle anywhere in the world.

I meant it as in, in the Netherlands our government cannot refuse to register a protest if it is peaceful, and obeys the law (which specifically states that nonviolent protest is allowed).

The situation really is different than in Russia.

Indeed, some police were chased by rioters. The rioters are throwing stones and fireworks at the police. In the worse cases, the riot police responds by using a water cannon to disperse the rioters: ME veegt pleinen in Amsterdam en Eindhoven leeg | NU.nl

I find curfews weird. As if coronavirus is more likely to get you at night. You’d think it’s better for people to do their business at night, if they can, when there’re fewer people around.

It’s mostly meant to stop people organising get-togethers in the evening.

This is a slippery slope.
Just a note, from a country so deeply convinced it’s a democracy, when crystals shutter it tells itself it’s raining.
