ogs beeps at me when the game is over, but remains discreetly silent when one begins, as if daring me to look away while wating for someone to accept. tiresome…

Should be an intrusive sound, like the one on Counter-Strike: Global Ofensive:
I thought it was going to be a huge bang when the game started 
They nailed it, it is an annoying sound, but it does not make you jump when you hear it.
And there’s the “Ready” at the begining preparing the player for the “blips”.
