Knowing that it is here makes it very easy, because it is the first thing we see when we visit:

I have no idea how we would have gone from “temple tank somewhere in India” to “Anuradhapura” though - is there a clue we’re not seeing? I thought the stepped design might be a clue, but it turns out “that is how they do everywhere”

This view, showing both, with the north-south alignment might have been kinder

… but one thing is for sure: it is amazingly hard to tell what will be hard and what won’t, in this game, isn’t it!?

Something the above screenshot conveys better is what it is like to visit these places. It doesn’t show the ubiqitous crushing crowds, but it does show the filth quite effectively.

Wikipedia “Some tanks are said to cure various diseases and maladies when bathed in” … you wouldn’t catch me bathing in there hoping to cure a disease :open_mouth:

It also shows the actual (experienced) colour balance much more truthfully. The photosphere picture posted has this wonderful deep green feel to it, with matching blues and oranges.

The streetview image shows much more how I experience it anyhow: washed out and dirty-grey.

Something to bear in mind when planning the bucket-list trip

I didn’t, I actually couldn’t find it at all, having viewed several hundreds of tanks, but I guess that’s a good revenge from your cathedral experience

Now it’s statues

I’ve tried the direct “what is this statue” approach, but no joy that way.

My current thinking is:

  • It looks like an Italian major city.
  • Darned if I can see any clue that it isn’t, so if it’s “doable” then we have to assume its Rome
  • Assumption: we’re standing next to a major attraction, with our back to it, looking at a statue that is “part of” it
  • Because if it isn’t a major attraction, then how could we find it?
  • Maybe the electronic sign is a clue, but I haven’t found a lead on that.

… in fact, I’ve been cruising around Rome and haven’t seen a single sign like that :frowning:

I’m not sure it’s Rome, or even Italy. This kind of street can be found in many European cities. All of the traffic signs can be found all over Europe. I got some enjoyment out of the fact that someone painted a smiley on this damaged sign:

None of the license plates are visible, except for the truck, which is also useless since they are often different than the normal cars.

I think the electronic sign is a bus stop. It does not look like the electronic bus stops found in Rome. Nor does the garbage bin that’s visible right under the (probably) tourist with the pink bag:

I’m now trying to find cities that have this style of garbage bin

Nice work. As I said, I only arrived at Rome out of the path of statue… no other clue… must be major city with statues

Nice that you found some other leads. I agree that the electronic sign seems to refute the Rome assumption. Also interestingly cruising around Rome I had the feeling that all the streets were different feeling - somehow not as cramped.

I could find these egg-shaped bins in Hamburg, Berlin and Vienna, but in each of those cities they’re bright orange… Also, this image does not look like either of those cities.

I think I’m at a dead end…

Yeah, I have a feeling that we will find this is a relatively famous statue, like the earlier one by the river, but in the absence of actually recognising it, we’re missing something to start from.

Yeah, that one is really hard indeed. I thought one would see better -but that’s probably because I’ve been there myself- that this is one of two statues flanking the end of a bridge. And yes, we’re in major Italian city.

Do you have any idea how many bridges there are in Rome alone?

I thought temple tanks were a peculiarly Sri Lankan thing. Interesting ^^

No way, I had no idea! Alright, it’s not Rome, nor Naples, nor Milan.

This is a bit a wider angle. I tried to redact the name of the bridge. If you could look to the left, you would recognize the city for sure, but probably only if you had ever seen that landmark before.

You’re hinting at this landmark:

Because this is Firenze (Florence), the Santa Trinita bridge, to be exact. I had tried finding the statue by specifically searching for statues in Firenze, but even if you filter out David, there are just too many statues…

No, I’m hinting at the Ponte Vecchio, but of course you are correct

Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, all the same :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What I didn’t do, but should have, is search for bins in Firenze:

Det är Knugens hus.

I’m on mobile right now, and haven’t figured out to post pictures yet. Maybe @Eugene wants to do one?
