This one has served me well:
Japanese proverb that means ‘this moment only exists now and will not happen again’… but, with a pun on the kanji 碁
No fair, bringing the pros in here
(that’s Hajin Lee, right?)
Correct
One of my favourites is a complementary pair.
If white has all 4 corners, black should resign.
And its humourous partner,
If black has all 4 corners, black should resign
Lou Dibella in the film Champs (2014) says exactly that…!
Not limited to go, but quite applicable to go IMO:
“The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.”
It follows that:
“If ANY player has all 4 corners, Black should resign.”
I think this is where the saying that Go proverbs only apply to Black stemmed from
Make a fist before striking.
---- or as Dwyrin has sometimes put it, do not attempt to engage the opponent with a wet noodle.
Because white only plays teaching games
My opponent’s best move is my best move.
“Forgo the small and take the big.”
Note: While I like this a LOT, this also is a dangerous one for me:
I think it is a good suggestion when I play Black (see above about proverbs applying only to Black!), but when I play White, this often leads to me being too greedy, playign dare-devilishly, and then losing huge chunks.
I almost forgot Jorge Luis Borges quote about Go… I love it!
Maybe that’s because you’re neglecting this proverb?
When something is urgent, you should play there even though it might seem small.
Otherwise you could be getting yourself into this situation:
A bit obsolete proverb due to AI analysis, humans were a bit coward on this.

A bit obsolete proverb due to AI analysis, humans were a bit coward on this.
Really? I think AI tend to play quite tightly when it comes to group safety, perhaps even more tightly than human pros. My impression is that AI will only play more loosely when they see opportunities to sacrifice/trade a weak-ish/insecure group for good compensation.
