I wholeheartedly concur! That source photo is indeed a sad sight!
Although it’s a stunning and famous example of early 20th century photography, and historically important for its subject matter, the image of a big game hunter standing over his quarry, especially when that specimen was one of the last few of a rapidly dwindling species, is really quite jarring and depressing from our modern perspective. It speaks of a vastly different time, which did not share our current concerns for conservationism, and reflects the hubris of our forebears who doubted that human activity, from over-hunting to habitat destruction, could ever so drastically harm the natural world.
