FYI this is Korean not Chinese.
If anyone knows anything about Korea, they can write down for us what the amount is today. It was in their cattle today.
I think you meant to ask if someone knows Korean and can translate? And it was in the Korean news today?
This is not true at all. All pros (including Byun Sangil) take the stones off the board before hitting the clock. Check any stream on Baduk TV or K Baduk.
No, it was in their cattle.
Many pros have already been penalized for not taking the dead stones off the board before pressing the clock. I have never seen Byun doing it.
I think people are confused because they take the stones off the board, press the clock, then put in the lid. This is allowed as long as all the dead stones are off the board. You don’t need to put the dead stones in the lid before pressing the clock.
(Sorry for a bit convoluted answer )
I might be wrong as I didn’t read the full rules especially in the original version but are we not circling back to the same issue about refereeing quality issue ?
- the rule of stones in the lid does not specify the timelime. → It is the practice of latest referee decision that sets the precedent that putting the stone in the lid at a time that displeases the referee can lead to a full game loss
- The rule for clock management is not super specific about such sequencing. → it is the practice that generally referees will not enforce a specific sequencing other than stones being off the board before clocking.
The second point feels reasonable because rules are stable and a lot of precedents . Thus Byun being penalized for wrong sequencing by some twisted interpretation of rules would feel wrong ?
However, the first point feels more problematic due to recency of rules and inability of the referee to properly accompany and support new rule implementation to the benefit of smooth and quality games.
I feel it weird that most official answers from Korea ignore completely that referee also had the power to avoid such extreme outcome , even if technically Ke jie didn’t follow the interpretation of the rules of the referee , which he admits ( also leading to the complain about time management during the dispute and potential referee collusion but I doubt China would push it as it’s stronger accusation and harder to prove if it was to be true which I’m not sure about either )
Interesting, I don’t know chess enough to know why the trend would stay high ? Or is it normal because it is western search engine and its general chess/magnus popularity?
Also a good comparison would be to look at baidu and naver i guess , since google is even blocked in china haha.
Seems like the chances of a rematch are getting very low as Korea already officially recognised that Byun won the LG cup for the first time.
That is how professional Baduk is played!
Which ironically makes the rule useless for its intent at counting prisoners by looking at this pile
What happens when you under time pressure and you have to decide if you have time to pick up all the stones before capturing
Per Chapter 3, Article 14, Section 2 of the Korean rules, you may pause the clock to pick up captured stones.
Not entirely useless. At least the rule ensures that it’s all there (no stone left unnoticed on the other side, or behind an arm etc.).
I agree that it’s too many to accurately count at a glance, but at least you know it and you can have a closer look in the lid if necessary.
Although in that situation I’d find it better that the tournament just provides a second lid.
I wonder whether he was thinking about LG Cup when he was doing that lol. But honestly it’s such a waste of time to try to put the stones nicely in the bowl.
Finally some updates.
Results of the KBA Steering Committee Meeting regarding the LG Cup Incident
The 1st Korea Baduk Association Steering Committee meeting of 2025 was held on the 3rd at the Korea Baduk Association in Majang-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
At this steering committee meeting, they discussed “measures to respond to China’s position regarding the 29th LG Cup”.
The Korea Baduk Association announced the contents of the Korea Baduk Association Steering Committee meeting results as follows:
- Regarding the warnings due to violations of rules outside the board, such as the change in the rules on the storage of captures stones that became controversial in the finals of the 29th LG Cup, we have decided to eliminate the rule that results in a loss by forfeit to due accumulated fouls.
- We will promptly share and discuss the matters decided at today’s meeting with the Chinese Weiqi Association, and do our best to ensure the normal hosting of upcoming world competitions such as the Nongshim Ramen Cup World Baduk Championship.
- Furthermore, we will actively cooperate with China, Japan, etc. to establish regulations that can be applied without problems in future world competitions.

P.S. The KBA only released the above 3 points. It seems that the rules regarding the captured stones will be relaxed (but not removed completely?), but at this moment it is not sure how they will be changed exactly.
A bit of technology could obviate the need for how captured stones are placed. Let the judges be in charge of maintaining the official count of prisoners removed from the board. They could even be assisted through multiple camera angles and AI-powered automated stone counting (imagine Hawk-Eye™ for Go). Also, set up a big, bright electronic scoreboard, right next to the players, which can display the number of prisoners, as well as clock information. Then, it won’t matter what the players do with the captured stones. They could even return them to their opponent’s bowl.
I think technologically that’s definitely possible. But I think there’s a reason why smart boards or cameras are not widely used even though they are already available…
