Maybe in your planet. I am using a private device right now. And using a public computer does not necessarily mean that you must never do things that you can do at your home computer.
No, I addressed the issue, as I now see others had before me. Malkovich chat does exactly what it was designed to do. If you want a private conversation with your opponent via the game chat, that would be a new feature. Perhaps there would be community support for thatāI donāt know.
Out of curiosity, is it more common in your country for people to use public computers than to use their own devices (maybe owning their own devices is uncommon)? Because where Iām from, itās pretty unusual to use a public device for most things, and to be honest I donāt really understand why you are surprised that we think differently. I must be missing some context.
I can see how the ideal behavior for the Malkovich thing might be that itās only visible to logged-on users. I wonder how difficult it would be to implement something like that, but I canāt imagine it would be a very high priority.
Are there other services (maybe chess websites or something) that behave the way you expect them to in this regard? I donāt know of any that have a Malkovich system, so Iād be curious to hear.
In most websites, itās understood that thereās some degree of publicity in messages on games, so when I came to OGS, it basically behaved the way I expected. Maybe I just happened upon the unusual side of the internet, idkā¦
I want(ed) a game comment that will not be seen by anyone, but me, until the games end.
The OGS settings should be stored in the server, and not in my browsers.
And if most of your friends, or people you know, have such habits, that is your social reality. Mine is different!
Private conversation is one question I mentioned, although the Malkovich comment BIG ISSUE is the main discussion of this thread, as it is in the title of it. Do not mix what I said. It is pretty clear in the first message of this thread.
Guys i wish i had a pizza.
@Uberdude left a neat comment about the origin and purpose of Malkovich chat on a Reddit thread that I just found while googling:
Uberdude's comment on a reddit thread
A malkovich log is comments you can make on the game which are visible to you and observers but not the other player. The name comes from the old GoDiscussions forum and its successor L19²GO (Malkovich) ⢠Life In 19x19, in which users would play a correspondence-style game on the forum using its go diagram feature and record their thoughts in a hidden text area. The other player is not supposed to read it, but kibitzers can. This allows kibitzers to see what is going on inside the playersā head, the name comes from the film āBeing John Malkovichā in which the characters find a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich. Kibitzers can also discuss why the player made moves etc, but arenāt supposed to help them. It can be interesting for weaker players to see how stronger players think, and also vice versa. I actually started a Malkovich game there you might like to check out but never finished it.
Iām sure a lot of people already knew this, but I sure didnāt. Iād assumed it was another Chess thing weād stolen
Anyone but you? If you wrote everything correctly, with all respect, why just donāt use notes(paper ones or computer)?
As I said, Malkovich works exactly as designed. What you want is a new feature.
For your curiosity: here, where we live, we will prefer to use a computer instead of a phone, since using a phone is usually clumsy. So, if there is a computer we can use (for distracting, like hereā¦), we will choose it preferably.
Before coming here, I used to have an account in DGS. But I abandoned there dues to some bad choices that happened there. Myself, and other people I knew there, did the same.
And in the DGS system, all the comments in PUBLIC GAMES are ALWAYS PRIVATE, unless the players make EACH ONE THEY WANT TO BE PUBLIC, PUBLIC, with something to be made every time. This is how I think it should be. My moves being public is fine⦠the conversations I have with each person I play, no way!
I still have an account in IGS too. We use there to play just fast (live) games though, not my preferable ones, which I play most of the time, the correspondence ones.
I donāt think you realize what you actually suggesting by that, updates like that puts servers into a big burden, and itās pretty unnecessary. Look, I understand that you have your own culture(Brazil?), and you want some security measures etc. But other people doesnāt want that, and you should respect that too. Instead of aggressive behavior with āquitting OGSā try to create something that can really work in practice and help your cultural needs too.
So⦠in the brilliant OGS system, it seems it is impossible to create a rated game that is private, right? I just made a test with
So, as said before, private chatting is impossible in rated games HERE.
Anything else to be said?
Maybe itās a good suggestion, but honestly, what for? You still have private messages(you hate it for some reason but they clearly work and there is no problem with that, + chat window can be accessed even in the game so (?!)
You play your games publicly - imagine this as a game at the park. In most cases no one cares about your games, but if something wants to - they can. I donāt see problems in that perception at all
I get it, you donāt like the idea that someone can see what you are typing, but there are ethics to this game, and and the time of game ideally you shouldnāt even discuss private things. But I get it, you want to do it - access your opponents through PMs.
And Iām already prepared to read that you donāt want to, itās inconvenient because you saw different and you think there are better, but this isnāt a topic about your willingness, its about ability, and players here, on OGS, have ability to choose how to speak with their opponents during the game.
I already told you this at the start. Rated games canāt be private.
Big burden? Remembering the themes and most settings is a burden? But remembering my email, my profile photo, and my name is not?
I am sure many people will be disappointed if their settings are rememberedā¦
I see you have no experience in this field whatsoever. Instead of laughing I would suggest you doing your research beforehand.
I see you have [ā¦]
I suggest that you should make a lot of research before assuming, or at least you should ask, to be sure.
I never played on DGS, so I didnāt know about that. And that does sound like a really cool system actually. Iād love to be able to play around with it. But seeing as how there are so many workarounds, i can see why itās not a priority for the devlopers.
hear me out. It kind of sounds like what youāre describing is the same thing as reviewing a game after the game, which is a very common thing that most serious go players do at some point - share their thoughts after the game with their opponent and onlookers.
But you want to be able to write down your thoughts as they happen to you, and you donāt want to wait until the game is over, because itās likely youāll forget some of your thoughts. Is this an accurate assessment?
so why not just⦠write them down? send an email to yourself or something. heck, you can use OGSās own features to keep private messages for yourself - I just made this private demo board and chatted in it, but iām the only one who can see it.
Then itās freely available to you and you can share your thoughts after the game.
I get that itās not the perfect convenience youāre wishing for, but personally iām fine with little workarounds like this if it means i get to use as cool a services as OGS.
If you think that your nickname and pass works same way as your settings???
I can explain why it will be a burden or at very least no-priority thing at all, but I donāt think you want to hear it(Instead childish laugh would be better, ofc). Iāll amazed if you are working in the IT, but I honestly donāt know how that would be possible
You have a serious reading issueā¦
