New game: Asli (Advanced Square Lifeline)

This game feels like Go from another planet to me. :smiley:

The key rule is this: a group is captured if there is no path of connected empty points between that group and any other group of its color. The path does not need to be a straight line.

Full rules and more in a BoardGameGeek thread. You can also replay the above game with the EidoGo viewer.

That looks interesting, interested in /suggest-ing it on the AP Discord Server?

Thatā€™s like a new way to look on go so i find it really interesting. Kind of thing that doesnā€™t happen often. I guess i ll spend a bit of my time later on this.

Hello LuisB,

this is an interesting idea, I like it! If you are interested in go variants, maybe youā€™ll be interested to hear that members of this forum have started a project about it: https://forums.online-go.com/t/collective-development-of-a-server-for-variants/

Would it be okay if I implement this game as a variant there?

Kind regards,
Martin

I wonder if using a Go rule set and just changing the capture rule like this would make an interesting game. Maybe the other rules are not important.

Yeah

That would be more than okay! Thank you for your interest. I would love to see my game there. Itā€™s now called Asli, and the official rules (slightly updated since I started this thread) are here: Asli | Board Game | BoardGameGeek

Thatā€™s basically what the game is. But, importantly, the ko rule is also replaced with an alternative ā€œincursion ruleā€ that better fits the capture mechanism. This rule prevents forced cycles without the need to remember previous positions.

Also, for aesthetic reasons, the game uses Berlekampā€™s prisoner return rule in lieu of traditional scoring.

Done!

Hereā€™s an excerpt from a post I made in the Irensei thread explaining how to make the stones Black and White, as in Go. This is only the tip of the iceberg of what is possible through APā€™s customization tools

Step by Step Instructions

Custom CSS

CSS to invert the color of the prison so that it represents how many points in prisoners that color has, rather than the default how many prisoners of that color are there

CSS Code
/*
 * Game-specific
 */

/* enlarge hoshi */
g#gridlines circle {
	r: 5;
}

/* Invert Prison Color */
/* Black -> White */
#aprender-glyph-0556f9360f93a > circle {
	fill: #eee8d5; /* LM highlights */
}
/* White -> Black */
#aprender-glyph-be60146b41b9d > circle {
	fill: #073642; /* DM highlights */
}

Tsumeasli

All tsumeasli are Black to play and either Live or Kill and are intended to teach basic concepts of Asli in an organic manner, like the Cho Chikun Tsumego collection. As in tsumego, all strings connected to the outside are assumed to be alive, unconditional life is better than seki is better than ko

Difficulty: Varies, but mostly on the easier side as weā€™re still learning so much about Asli

This one is an illegal position, oops: the a16 stone should be removed

  6. b17 c18 e18 (I believe)

  7. d18 (leads to something like Ko)

b16 kills the b17 stone in that line

Yes, the ladder is the intended solution

e14 g13 e15 is technically 1 point better, I believe

Yep

c14 was my intended solution, and I donā€™t see anything better (I had not considered d13, but upon further consideration, I believe White can push out with d15), but I have and will make mistakes in composing tsumeasli, so keep trying to break them :smiley:

Good job on these, btw; are you planning to try your hand at composing some yourself?

I donā€™t see how that answer makes sense.

Yes, of course. Minor error.

No, but I always enjoy a good puzzle!

After b17 c18 e18, White can play b16 to kill the b17 stone and live. After Black extends down with a17, White can play a19 to give everything enough liberties to kill

While playing through that position, I found another position that would probably make a good puzzle by itself.

So I guess I lied about not making any of my own.

(not a tsumeasli proper, but an endgame puzzle (prison has 0 stones))

Not a hard one, but an interesting one for understanding how ā€œKoā€ works in Asli.
