defates is quite an interesting typo.
- It’s probably a typo for defeats, but
- It also resembles deflates, as in deflate the ego, a phrase meaning to humble, ie. to make someone more humble by defeating or debasing them, and
- It looks like a non-existent verb “defate”, which could be interpreted as “to prevent someone from achieving their supposed manifest fate”.
