I am pretty sure that is a measure in place to prevent people cheating against the bots. I think that is unrelated to this big glitch. If it was a ranked game, you could report it to be annulled, although I don’t really know what the mods want us to do about that at this point.
That’s by design. It’s not the bot, but OGS scoring the game. Bots cannot deside if your scoring is correct. The scoring algorithm works in most cases. It has some problems with seki and uncaptured dead groups with many liberties.
In your case, I found only 1 bot game in your game history, and its score was correct.
We do but they’re daily’s, so restoring from them would have wiped out about 12 hours of games and game progress, which is about 12k games and progress on several thousand more, so strictly by the numbers, would have caused more damage.
I disagree that the backup would be worse by numbers. Most people would just play the same moves again from my experience and it was only about 12 hours so in most games there wouldn’t be a lot of moves played.
I only lost one game, which, according to the computer analyses was, very much in my favor, but even with this one game I feel kinda sad that all the time I put into the moves of this game “got wasted” (I still had a fun game, but you know what I mean I hope). However there are some more implications to this:
Tournaments which take a long time to finish are compromised. For tournaments which take more or than a year this is a lot of effort put in by all the players and it feels weird to me, knowing that in all that tournaments, it could be that the points are not as they should be, worst case beeing that the wrong person wins the whole tournament.
Ladders will recover by time, but even there may be some weird stuff happening in the rankings. E.g. I like to challenge much stronger opponents and if I would have won such a game by this bug I would be for sure in a higher position than I should be.
Nothing from this is going to stop me playing in the ladder, long tournaments and so on, but I would like to ask you to consider the feelings of those players as well. Not only those who lost the games, but I wouldn’t even feel good to win a tournament because of a bug.
Note that this is from a complete non-technical perspective an argument that a backup would have been better than annulling the games. It does not consider the work a backup creates at all.
You forgot about live games.
Many of the 12k games anoek mentioned are live games (a quick estimation let to about half of them are). Reverting the database would not only mean the games don’t count for rating, but would delete the game records as well.
True, I forgot about live games, sorry for that!
Still, I would be more happy to lose my live games, than my correspondence games. Again, this is not much about the lost games for me, but the implications it has on ongoing tournaments, which effects much more than the 8% lost games mentioned previously.
Sadly here I can only dive into guesses because I don’t know the actual technical background of ogs, but from my database knowledge it could/should be possible to extract all live games and at least apply the results if not all data. The problems should be the “corrupted” data of ongoing games. Of course it would add additional work this way. Maybe it could be good to save correspondence and live games in different databases?
@anoek I was wondering if this is also an issue connected to this: when I play a game right now my rank says “provisional rank” even though i am 23k. Is this something you did as a first step for fixing the ranks?
Thank you for doing your best to fix this!
I am really enjoying playing on the OGS, so keep the good work up
Update 5:
- Manual weekend has been turned off
Yeah I’ve got a fix ready for that, putting a few more fixes in before I deploy it. It’ll be released today.
@anoek thanks for your fast response.
It’s been the longest weekend in general for the world (sigh). Maybe our poor server broke from this increasing black hole in time, space and sanity everywhere.
Thank you very much for handling this situation so well.

@anoek it seems that the “its your turn” count does not work anymore on the notification bar. I can only see in which games I can make A move when I open my profile. Can you please look at that? Thanks
Should be fixed
Yes it is, Thank you
I have no more problems with OGS now
Everything is fixed
Thanks
Yay! I think everything is fixed. I only had one correspondence game which got affected.
ok but are we go buddys xhu98
Is this chat about being go buddies really related to correspondence games lost by disconnection? I don’t know if it needs a new topic, but I don’t think we need a spread out conversation about it in this topic.
@anoek, have the ranks already been readjusted after the incident?
