Rhombitrihexagonal Go

Taking mirror go to a whole new level

In case people are interested in Go-like games on similar style boards, I came across

Lotus at Sensei's Library

with an interactive board at Lotus, though not a sandbox.

It’s like othello style captures instead of usual stone removal.

Weird game. There is a territory count, but no pass at the end, so I’m not sure what the goal of the game is. It looks like we want to play in the opponent territory until they have no eyes left (especially since captured stones are not removed, so eye-space disappears quickly).
Also, there is either a bug, or a weird interface design choice: if you hover over an intersection that would be a suicide, the stone appears in your opponent’s colour instead of your own.

Also, again either a bug or a weird rule: it looks like it’s not possible to play the final capturing move, if the opponent has only one group left with only one liberty left. Perhaps this is their equivalent of “passing”: if the opponent has only one group left, then we can’t kill them even if they have filled all their eyespace, and it’s time to count the territory to determine the victor.

I probably should’ve linked to some rules also Lotus though I think there is a rules link on that page, but maybe not so clear.

  • Next to the board is a 15-point track marked in the center. It is there because passing on one’s turn earns a point, indicated by moving the marker.
  • If a player passes his turn, he moves the marker one point towards him. The player at whose side the marker is at the end of the game, receives the corresponding number of points in addition to the points he has on the board.

and the end of the game

Object and counting

  • The game ends by one player’s resignation or if both pass completely on successive turns. In the latter case dead stones are reversed.
  • The winner is now the player with the most territory.
Territory consists of a player’s number of stones on the board plus the number of cells totally surrounded by his stones
The player whose side it is on also adds the number of points indicated by the marker.
  • Seki may occur: empty points not totally surrounded by either player count for neither.

Then for your question about life and death

  • A group consists of a single stone or several connected stones of the same color. The liberties of a group are the adjacent vacant points. The stones in a group share the group’s liberties.
  • A group lives unconditionally if it contains a lotus - six stones around one of the boards seven hexagons. A group without a lotus lives as long as it has at least one liberty.

So there’s some weird additional rules

That must have been it!

The other thing is that suicide is legal, so it’s possible that the last move that looked like it was a capturing move (if we ignored the lotus is alive rule) was possibly just a suicide so it swaps to the opponents color. At least that’s what it looked like when I tried filling in the board, but it did confuse me. I think that could be it though.

Strange game, if one is comparing directly to a similar go game played on the same board. Still interesting maybe to see games played on different boards.

Etiquette dictates you shout

ATARI!

Is “etiquette” a euphemism for “rubbing salt in your opponent’s wound”?

For one second I thought you meant that I overlooked an atari on my side…
