Rhombitrihexagonal Go

The naming is a bit wonky and will likely change in future. “abstract” because the programming part that handles captures in this variant facilitates a wide range of board patterns. So we can add new patterns in the future without changing the way captures are computed.

FYI this is fixed now, so y’all can try stuff like custom komi

(sorry for breaking it!)

Actually I do not suppose that Vsotvep claims to have “created” this variant, which I am sure has occurred to many others. I certainly started playing a game of it against Matthew Macfadyen during, I believe, the Amsterdam International Tournament (around Ascension Day) in about 1985, though I do not know if we finished it.

I had constructed the board some time before with a compass by drawing suitably sized circles round the centres of the hexagons. Unfortunately, I foolishly chose a triangular outline, rather than the hexagonal one here or a lozenge, and never got round to making a better one. I probably still have it somewhere.

As to the ladders, I recall that they either capture in a few moves or get too many liberties, depending on their orientation.

Anyway, I am glad to see another game after all these years!

Thanks very much for this. Are you and Martin3141 collaborating on this? Is it possible to save and replay games? (On my Android phone, I did not seem to have any controls other than “take seat”, Home and About.)

P.S. I see now that the Go Variants thread answers some of my questions.

Thanks for trying it out!

Currently it’s @martin3141, @Jon_Ko and me, but anyone is welcome to contribute.

The ability to replay a game is not there yet, but that is planned. If I had to guess, not a “soon” feature though since there’s a lot of rough edges we need to take care of (Where’s the pass button?? :joy:)

Quick, someone try mirroring and report on whether it spoils this board! Then we should try the triangle-centered one.

It doesn’t:

Is that the new logo for this variant?

Nah take away the top black stone so it’s a smily face :slightly_smiling_face:

OK, mirroring is not such a problem (but what if you do not realise at first? and does Black lose out if White stops mirroring?), but for anyone who wanted people to open in the corners (“4-4”), a lozenge outline would provide two. Perhaps this could be an alternative somewhere (perhaps I should look at the code myself).
