Sliding Stones Analysis Tool

When analyzing games, specially when it comes to doing tewari, in person, one of the nicest ways of showing how an exchange was good or bad is to move the stones on the board.

Unfortunately, most Go editors don’t allow this, including OGS. However, this is one of the nicest features in MultiGo. It would be really nice to have it on OGS as well.

Does he use MultiGo in his videos? I thought he used Tygem’s or Fox’s crappy review tools, or Lizzie.

Might be his older ones of topic lectures rather than live game reviews.

I’ve never thought to want that, but in retrospect I really ought to have

Thanks - so “pick up the last moved stone and put it down again” is what we’re after?

Would we ever want to pick up some other stone on the board, other than the “last moved”?

Well, I’m trying to emulate what you could do with your hands in person. Sometimes we slide more than one stone, but I’m not sure how we would do that with a mouse. Something like shift clicking many stones and then sliding them? That could be cool.

With Chinese stones there is the option to flip the stone, used sometimes for variants. Would be quite unique if OGS has this option (among go servers)

Kind of useless though when you can number and mark the stones already.

I don’t know if moving the stones is necessary exactly. There’s already an option to delete stones from the board, so you can delete and replace stones for tewari if one wanted.

Maybe if deleting stones was easier? For instance I think now you need to click the white black stone button and click that one or twice, or hold shift to swap the colour to make it match the stone you want to remove.

It’s not too bad as is, but maybe it’s not obvious it removes stones?

No, Yes.

When illustrating a tewari argument, the stone(s) you want to move will usually not be the last ones played, but earlier in the sequence. It could be multiple. I think a good way to implement this from a control perspective would be a long click and then drag the stone. You don’t want it to happen on too short a click to prevent annoying false positives of it happening when you are just a bit clumsy with the mouse.

It’s bit different, it’s stones with a slightly different looking, not so like a mark or a number.

It’s: I put a variation not numbered but you can still make the difference between the stones already in place and the ones of the variation. You don’t always need numbers or marks, just a bit of easyness. Besides aesthetics, numbering the stones is a superfluous constraint at time we may want to not have. Like in free placement, I may not want to care about the order of the moves.

Anyway, we can live without.

Visual cues are very often helpful. I think one setting that could be added to make variations pop up even more would be adding a different outline color to variation stones, for example.

And clicking on stones is not even close to how satisfying and helpful sliding stones would be. Imagine doing something akin to clicking stones on a real board, that would be super clunky.

At any rate, adding a sliding stones feature would be an option, not mandatory, so if people prefer clicking, they could do so.

Like picking them up?

Clicking a stone would be more like tapping a stone than picking it up. Clicking and having the stone disappear is a much more sudden and unreal thing when compared to the real world. These are all very different things in the end actually.
