The all-in-one democratic game

I don’t think that B10 is sente for White anymore, after Black has A16 (I wrote about that when I argued for D15 instead of B16).

I don’t know what is best for Black now. I think I’d like to see how White responds to D12/E11 and keep A16 and B10 as options if White insists on enclosing. For example: b D12, w E12, b E11, w F11, b D11, w D10, b F10 cut. However, it seems that White can just protect at F12 and Black has to come back to A16 immediately. Then White can handle the cutting stone by pressing up and seems to be in not too bad shape on the left side.

So, maybe this is too early, and simply living with A16 keeps more options open. Then White has to decide whether to defend on the left side (Black now has moves like C8 ) or maybe do something for the group in the lower right.

I mistype P12 to P11…

You mistyped H3 vs H4 before too, it confused me a bit before I could see the diagram

Can White just please prioritize expanding that giant upper moyo? Wouldn’t that be the biggest move mid-game-wise? I mean either Q11 or even something safe like Q13 - that just seems much bigger than nickle-and-diming the right edge - plus it would discourage K16, etc

Regarding the debate about Whites R11 attachment, here’s another answer by Black to consider:

Black can play the clamp with 3 as in this diagram. If White plays B then Black plays A and vice versa. If White plays S12, Black can block with S13. So I believe Black can stay connected like this.

This is not to say that White R11 is bad, on the contrary. In this situation, If White comes out with B and Black connects with A, White might play the counter-clamp with R13:

It seems difficult to avoid getting pressed low as Black.

On the other hand, if Black plays Hane on the second line, I’m thinking White can play the cross-cut to separate Black on the right:

I think it’s more and less the same idea.
It’s just white could play a bit more agressive, ready to use his influence. If black don’t take some challenge, the result may be even more impressive as just a surrounding move.

When white attaches at R11, black may also consider extending to Q12. What is white’s plan in that case?

So maybe white should just play Q12 first?

Just block at Q11, I think.

I feel like White Q11 is more flexible than R11 or P12 - it allows White more options based on how Black responds, whereas playing the attachment feels like one is already committed to one of the variations above

Black A16 is our winner.

Time to consider next move.

On the right side, I would be thinking of S9. I want to strengthen that weakish white group.

I feel like White’s lower right group has a few options to escape or make eyes, so I’m going to suggest Q11 - it will either help expand White’s massive upper moyo or help the lower right group, depending on how Black aswers

I think that the right side is the focus right now.

I find R11 quite attractive, but it seems to me that if Black responds with R10, White has to reinforce the group below first.

Pressing with Q11 or Q10 seems to either weaken the white group below or drive the black group into White’s moyo.

Something around O7, N7, or O8 looks natural to me, but Black has no real problem then and can enter the white moyo, maybe around K15. Same with S9, which additionally reduces the aji around R11 and doesn’t help so much in the centre.

So what I’m thinking now is to play P12, which expands the moyo significantly, and Black would have to separate the white group before it can be really attacked.

I like Q12 as suggested above, for the same reasons. It feels good to expand White’s framework that way.

Sadly, C17 is gote for us – it doesn’t prevent B10 and B18 from being miai for life.

Definitely we should be playing somewhere on the eastern half of the board.
I’ve had P12 in my thoughts for a long time.

I’d rather play P12 than the attachment at Q12

but it still should be included in the poll as “interesting move”
Later black may play C17 and white will have to answer with useless move.

crazy plan:
white B10 will prevent additional eye on top left black group
black may ignore that move
then white plays A18 and then there is chance to kill entire group

As an aggressive player, my preference is contact attachment and use the sente to attack, don’t give black breathing time to deal with the left side. Using R11 or Q12 that can threaten to kill the upper right black group, put pressure and limit black development toward the center, at the same time good for expanding upper side white moyo. And if black is busy fighting the lower right side white group would be relatively safe (live in ko, or as aji and ko threat materials).
