Fun linguistic fact: the word raptor is apparently cognate with

  • rapacious
  • rapt / rapture
  • ravenous
  • ravage, ravish
  • ravine
  • rape (probably)

They all derive ultimately from Latin rapio, a verb meaning “snatch, grab, carry off, abduct, rape”.

raptor is itself a Latin word, meaning “thief, plunderer, kidnapper”, with the plural raptĂłrĂ©s. It had a shorter hyponym fĂșr (pl. fĂșrĂ©s), “thief”, from which we get the adjective furtive.
