The ruleset of the game should be easier to see

May a mod regroup both disussion please?

That’s not true because only considering the 1 point difference. There are more differences between rules. (Handicap stones placement, suicide allowed or not, jigo, points in seki, komi…)

Done!

We should think more creatively about how to convey this sort of information

Do you have a specific idea already in mind?

For me the info exists already but ā€œhiddenā€ in the game info. So the improvment is to get it directly in the game page. Somewhere.

looks great, but I think needs more flashing/flickering

Propose what you want but me, i’m strongly against any kind of animation (like a scrolling) inside the game page. I find that very disturbing and unconfortable.

On Goquest, just to illustrate, they got advertising on the top of the game,.what a nightmare. Flashing, red on black… I need to hide it with my cigarette box.

That’s more as the sake of consistency. You can’t assume that everyone is aware that japanese rules have the largest use. (Take a newcomer for example).

There are other better options and surely more explicit as JP.
Symbol associated (scroll was suggested before, could be a book or another stylish page of writing symbol)
:beers: NZ
:scroll: NZ
:open_book: NZ
:bookmark: NZ

Note that :ok_hand::v::+1: are not good choices IMHO because of cultural differences on the meaning

Write fully: JP rules. (5 letters. Longest I found is in tchek, Pravidla, 8 letters. Ok i finally found a few more like tatar and aymara but not sure they have a go player base there. For ref: Kamachinaka 11 l. in aymara, I Love that language really )

NZ rules

With more freed place, may write Japanese rules afterall.

New Zealand rules

Edit, a last suggestion: flags (cover most but not a few special cases like tromp taylor, group tax…)

:new_zealand: rules

Thats very good point, espesially when considering that many beginners start by playing some games against bots, so they actually might get familiarised with chinese rules at first.

@dexonsmith what do you think about adding the word ā€œrulesā€ in that thing?

I am in favor of this suggestion. An ā“˜ on the black player card (or on both player cards might make more sense) which on hover or tap brings up more information about the game including ruleset and handicap. Not sure what else would go there, maybe the time controls in a bit more detail. I don’t like the score estimate thing that shows up on hover/tap currently.

While that is my preference out of all the options presented in this thread, it is only a slight preference. Overall I feel like I would get used to and stop noticing any of the options given here, as long as no flashing animations are used.

It was pointed out that ā“˜ looks like a 1 in a circle, at least to someone who’s expecting to see something like that.

I’m totally in favour of the current PR proposal:

I also might be keen for switch under the dash of the cockpit to just turn it off

But you might be right that "even if a person is not initially keen on those there, they’d get used to it.

Actually, this is probably Zen mode.

I’ve implemented @benjito’s suggestion of just spelling out the rules under the player cards in a draft pull request.

  • Removes unrelated-to-black game information from the black player card.
  • Spells out the word ā€œrulesā€ and avoids short forms that look like initials.
  • Uses some vertical space, but very little due to a slightly reduced font size. We can win this back in the future by tightening up the player cards (and I think horizontal space is at a greater premium).
  • Also added the word ā€œRankedā€ for ranked games, since there was an easy spot for it.

An example of an unranked game with a handicap:

An example of a ranked game with no handicap:

Would this satisfy parties on both sides?

A simple idea: Maybe for unranked games add the word ā€œUnrankedā€ exactly where ā€œRankedā€ is for ranked games, instead of blank space, for consistency.

In fact, how about having Ranked blank, on the assumption that less clutter for the most common thing is good?

Well we had players asking (forum&chat) how to know if ranked or not si i m not so much concerned on cluttering a little bit more.

Yeah - I’m one of them (asking for that). Yay that @dexonsmith added it. But I think I’d be happy if I knew that if it was unranked (the unusual case) then it would tell me. No big deal though.

Thing is, we don’t know what we don’t know … if there is something that can be turned ON or OFF, it is a bad idea to show only the OFF state but not the ON state.

Nah that’s not generally true. For example, we don’t pop up a warning against each game in the Play page to say ā€œthere’s nothing abnormal hereā€, we just flag them if they look odd.

Similarly, it would be perfectly valid to only show games that are ā€œunrankedā€ with an ā€œunrankedā€ indicator, because that’d be the ā€œunusualā€ thing to flag.

But I really don’t mind either way :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: I’m just disagreeing with the general principle that you stated :stuck_out_tongue:

The ON state can be implicitly shown by the lack of the OFF state indicator. So I argue that you are both right :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Only for people who may have noticed the OFF state indicator in some games — and who connect the (invisible ) dots.

Those who see nothing (and, for example, haven’t read this thread) may not know anything. That’s what I meant by ā€œwe don’t know what we don’t knowā€.
