Through the Years: Long Correspondence

Whoa, lots! People seem to be in a rush!

Was delighted to find out that (currently!) I am not—repeat: NOT—the player with the most unfinished games

The three players with just 2 completed games have actually finished all their games: it was a small group of three, so just two games each.

Slowest players at the moment are those two with just three completed games. My dashboard shows their names when you hover your mouse over the dots… but this is just a picture!

Both of them won three out of three so far.

Seems all the losers played just too quick.

This random fact has been brought to you by the number 6 and the letter T

We seem to have a few paused games with players inactive since a long time.

Does anyone know who - apart from gthe players - can unpause a game? Mods? The tournament director? It’s not urgent yet, but why not start discussing the options. (Especially since the tournament director has also become inactive. Is it possible to assign someone else?)

Only players and moderators. I am in favour of doing it when necessary.

(do you think it’s already necessary?)

I’d say it’s not urgent yet, but eventually it will be.

I would suggest that in the absence of the original tournament director we assign a new one or a small team. They could contact players in paused games (well, anyone can, but they might do it with a bit more authority) and if that doesn’t work they could request an unpause from mods.

It will be when the last unpaused games are finished, right?

Not necessary to do it earlier, IMO.

I checked for paused games.

At the moment there are 6 paused games out of 76 unfinished games.
4 of them are paused because some players are in vacation. They were paused few days ago.
The remaining two games have been already pointed out. They’re paused since Wednesday 17 March 2021 because of the same player.
That player has just tree active games, all of them paused.
In the chat of the third game they wrote:

September 6, 2020 - Désolée si je suis si lente pour jouer ces derniers, je suis noyée sous le boulot ^^"
January 5, 2021 - Après ma longue absence, me voilà de retour !

It seems like that player has problems to check their games, but they seem to be willing to end their games despite those long pauses.
My personal opinion is that it isn’t necessary to address that now.
There are several games going and some of them will take long time to end.
I hope that player will be able to resume their games and bring them to a natural end.

Depending on what ‘it’ is I may disagree. I don’t think it is a good idea to wait until all other games are finished and contact that player at that time. They might say ‘oh thanks, I entirely forgot about this, let me resume playing’ and take another 2 years for finishing the game. So contacting them should happen a lot earlier I’d say.

Just want to note that “Pause” ≠ “Vacation”.

  • Vacation

    • accrued over time
    • is capped
    • totally legitimate in a tournament where it is not disabled or explicitly forbidden
  • Pause

    • open-ended
    • should only be used in “sort of” emergencies, like, for example, in live games: visiting the toilet, or, in corr. games: if you’re off the net for a while
    • in tournaments, and IMO: should only be used in emergency, and only for a short time

OIC … yes, I didn’t think about the fact that they might still be far from endgame … so … let’s notify them approximately two years before their games might be finished

LOL, and what with lots of to-and-fro Ko fights

I’m stumped.

That’s true.
Nonetheless, when a player uses his vacation time, his games are “paused”.
The server itself uses this word, so I don’t know what else I could use.

Maybe we could borrow some German syntax and call them “vacationpaused”.
(back to the good ol’ language topic!)

Dang! IMO the interface should clearly show whether “paused” or “on vacation” :unamused:

It does.

When it’s paused there is a big button that says unpause or resume or some such thing.
On vacation, there is no such button.
If you’re a spectator, the point is quite moot as I see it.

As a spectator you can find the “vacation” mark on the clock of that player.

The only ambiguity is that on the clock of the other player there’s a mark “paused”, so you don’t really know whether it’s paused because of the former or the latter.

If it is normal paused by one of the players, both tiles say paused.
If it is paused because one of the players is on vacation, the player on vacation is indicated. I suspect (but haven’t tested) if both players are on vacation, both tiles may say vacation.

My opinion is that, when a single player is on vacation, the other player’s clock could simply show his remaining time instead of “paused”.
I don’t get the purpose of vriting “paused” there.

When it’s black turn, white’s clock doesn’t run but it doesn’t say “paused”: it shows the time.
Shouldn’t that work also during black’s vacation?
