I think this would all be a lot less controversial if the flags weren’t shown in games, at least not by default. Or if the hidden option to turn off your flag were more obvious.

I think we are talking about the policy instead of the the technical details. Will the OGS team blindly merge any flag requests?

I think in this case, the technical details make the policy: anyone can submit a new flag, but the process is not fully automated and requires validation.

I haven’t tested this theory myself, but I would guess the answer is “no”.

Perhaps the better comparison OP should have made was to suggest a Confederate flag (or the old Mississippi one) was added rather than California or New York.
