Toggle to enable/disable stone shadows

Could a toggle for stone shadows be added to the “Themes & Visuals” page in settings?

I know there’s a lot of work to be done on the site by the developers already. Appreciate all the hard work you do, regardless of whether or not this gets implemented

We have so many options there, I’m stunned we don’t already have this

Maybe it is already implemented. You should paint a stone without a shadow and upload it somewhere or encode into base64

I think the OP is referring to the shadow of the stone that is cast on the board, not the shadowing showing the contour of the stone:

I’m 99% sure we render that, and someone went to a lot of trouble to get it “just right” :squinting_face_with_tongue:

(I can recall discussions about the radius of stones and how that affects this shadow)

When old renderer is enabled there is nothing is cast on the board except the image of the stone.

So it is still possible to turn shadows off by uploading images without shadows.

Ah true. Although you do lose some of the other features using this method: you can’t make the stones touch, “reduce removed stone size” doesn’t work, nor do the “removed stone graphic” and the “stone font scale” options.

I know. I don’t like new renderer. I’m used to the old display.

Any UI changes always irritate me.

P. S. Do you see brown ranges at the screenshot? I hate it. It was blue before Chrome update. Now it is synced with Windows color theme. I wanna switch it back. I do not know how. It’s not OGS related. It affects any webpage.

I quite like the new new goban renderer, I especially like the design changes for removed stones. But I understand your frustration, redesigns in general usually bug me. Though I am stubborn and hate change.

Yikes, those sliders look terrible!

Is it just my eyes, or does the semi-transparent stone also look brownish.

There’s something really wrong there

No, it’s the shadow of the trees, not just the stone

No. Brownish is only browser UI elements likes checkbox and sliders. And it is not OGS bug. But may be it is possible to fix it by overriding style in CSS.

Maybe take the brown out of your “Windows Color Theme”?

(I’m not a Windows user, so I don’t know if this is a thing, but hey… it might be? )

I tried. It solves the issue with chrome but makes another with Windows UI.

Great idea, but maybe a little labour intensive.
Complicating factors (to mention a few):

  • is there one light source or more? (one shadow also half shadows)
  • what type of light source? (candles, old fashioned bulbs, led, sun light)
  • type of stones: very flat or very round?
  • is the light source adjustable in strength?
  • are they adjustable in color of light (with maybe even a disco program)?

In conversation about creating those shadows, which I am dimly recalling, the thing I remember most clearly is someone sharing a picture of the different types of Go stone by curvature radius and wondering which one to emulate. Along with noting the fact that black stones have a different curvature to white ones.

This kind of stuff:

The shape of the stones - #11 by yebellz

… so it definitely was taken into consideration. I can’t recall where that conversation was though - probably in a dev channel that has disappeared by now.

Thanks for asking nicely

This change is implemented. It’s in the queue for review/testing/deployment before we see it on the site.

Thank you!

Hi! I have noticed the toggle shadows and I think this is indeed an advancement of the UI! As someone who plays and designs custom skins for board and stones any further customisation is very much appreciated and noticed, so I thank you very much for your work!

I did however feel like the new shadows are a bit darker, is that correct? I feel like it affected some of my designs, which is unfortunate. I understand these things take time, so I would like to kindly ask for some way to change through the three states, shadowless, weak shadow, strong shadow in the future. That way players could adapt it to their favorite board designs.

As another note, changing the coordinates colours would be great as well! I think there used to be the same as line colour but now it seems like it’s muted? correct me if I’m wrong, please. For the future I would also love to be able to make lines and starpoints “invisible” to explore custom designs further.

Thank you very much!

The problem for me is not that there are shadows, but that they have gotten much bigger! The stones are floating above the board!
