Thank you!
Yeah it does feel like the shadows intensified recently
They definitely did, I just noticed them for the first time and went to settings to turn them off.
The change in shadows only coincidentally coincided with the “disable shadow” option ![]()
I didn’t know they were coming.
I’m pondering whether the “disable shadow” option should be a slider ![]()
FWIW I like the new ones ![]()
Thanks for the toggle!
Wonderful idea.
So you all know that the new shadows are modelled on expensive stones right?
If you want to feel like a pro, this is the shadow you need!
If you feel they are too floaty, perhaps you just need to upgrade you stones ![]()
This is, and I mean this legitimately, my least favourite thing OGS has ever done.
I don’t want shadows off completely.
I don’t want new INTENSE 3D FLOATING SHADOWS.
I want my subtle shadows back

Just for context:
Old subtle shadows:
New 3D bowling ball shadows:
Shadows off:
And so it is with a heavy heart that I bid my stone shadows goodbye for now, choosing the third option for lack of the first.
One the one hand, the above post made me feel “shadows are for lifelike stones and high quality image … the cartoonish stones don’t really warrant shadows”.
On the other hand, I can see that the cartoonish stones are subtly shaded, so that makes an argument for matching with a subtle shadow.
Anyhow, don’t despair, like everything, it’s a work in progress, not fixed in stone forever.
You have a good imagination ![]()
I could mention some playmobil or Lego pieces… But anyway I would rather see nothing at all, just go stones.
When light source is on the table near the board, shadow would be long, but its bad light source. Сhandelier on the ceiling would be better.
Looks like the shadow will be customizable very soon: Shadow theme selection support by anoek · Pull Request #3164 · online-go/online-go.com · GitHub
Thank you @anoek!
Hello everybody. This change was by me. ![]()
I know all too well that when a change occurs to a beloved thing it will invariably make a bunch of people mad. Let me start by saying that’s not my intent. Here’s some back story so you can understand my intent:
I was recently watching some of Telegraph Go’s older videos, in which he used some Go app on Steam to record specifically because he liked the lighting and animations. I took note, because his content looked significantly more professional than many others. I noticed that OGS boards looked decidedly flat and dated, and could easily stand to mimic better-lit, more-premium stones.
So I worked up new shadows, and here they are. To those saying such dramatic things as “they’re like blimps hovering over a city that is the board” … I personally can’t say I need that kind of drama in my life—but you do you. Yes, these stone shadows indicate greater depth, but I suspect if you give them a try after a bit you’ll come to realize they look pretty good; they look like 42mm slate and shell stones instead of thin/cheap stones.
All this said, I don’t need this to be the shadows’ final iteration. In fact, I think there’s a good case to be made that these shadows should mainly accompany realistic stone textures. Anime stones or plain black/white circles could stand to have hard shadows with lower depth—they’re just not the “standard” appearance of Go though, so these shadows aim to elevate the appearance of the board and stones to mimic high quality materials in a well-lit environment. The goal is to help OGS look more premium.
I know, I know, you hate it, and you probably hate me (just some stranger on the internet, right?). If so, I recommend you take a moment to think of how you can be constructive, and maybe some good will come of it.
Thanks for hearing me out. Bring on the hate…
Gosh. 42mm are monster stones, do you actually have some and play (Go, not pétanque) with them? 36mm is the the normal “thick” size and even that’s too much for me, I prefer 34mm.
