Upcoming interface changes to the Game page and AI reviews

Hello OGS!

We have a (in my opinion long overdue) update to the side bar of the game page

In summary:

  • The expanding slide out icon drawer is gone, those controls are all now at the bottom of the aside
  • The mobile layout has those options available at the bottom of the screen for easy access now instead of having to scroll all the way to the bottom.
  • The chat is now an optional thing you can toggle on and off quickly on mobile, and entirely under settings if you choose on both mobile and desktop.
  • A little ticking clock is near the clock to more clearly indicate whose turn it is. (Does not tick for correspondence games unless you’re really low on time, but is still present). [Yes you can disable the ticking under options]
  • Board theme settings have been integrated under the “More options” under the quick settings icon:

Furthermore the look and feel of the AI review information on board has been updated to hopefully be nicer to use:

Now instead of just a triangle to indicate which move we’re talking about, the stone is visible that we’re talking about and an indicator underneath represents what the engine thought of the move, and instead of green squares we switched to circles and now show the number of visits underneath the score/win rate delta.

Green blue ! is great, blue !! is the blue move, green + is good, yellow - is an inaccuracy, ? a mistake, and ?? a blunder.

If you’re interested in exploring the changes before they are released on the main site you can see them now on https://beta.online-go.com/ , and please do let me know if you run into any issues or have any suggestions before we release!

That looks very clean, I like that anaylsis is a toggle (and so is chat on mobile).

Since when are you going to change

The design is not convenient. The buttons are hidden … I don’t like it

The new design is a complete mess for mobile (can’t see the board, the players with the remaining time and the submit move button at the same time). Hope they are still working on it.

Thanks for the UI update, but how do i turn off this annoying next move shown with triangle? I can’t find it anywhere

Hi,

when you click on this menu button, the new widget is too big. It also opens in slow motion.

Better UI is not worth making basic functionality difficult. At least give us a setting to toggle back. Have you considered how this can affect go streams? It was already complicated to find tools, report game to mods, etc. Now its even more complicated.

This is the Online Go Server - I would expect you guys to make things easier for navigation and enhance gameplay through changes, not make it harder and more buggier. I am seriously considering other alternatives to move to permanently

What are you looking for that you have trouble finding?

Access to tools (such as analysis, conditional moves, score estimation, etc) are all down in the same place, the “Action bar”

Thanks for pointing that out, fixed.

I don’t see a way to turn off the AI on demo or review boards now - that seems like an oversight.

You can still do it from within the main settings, people were toggling it off by accident and wondering why they weren’t getting AI reviews when it was a prominent option.

It seems to have the opposite effect of what I would expect. When I have Enable AI Review set to on, I don’t get an AI graph, and when I have it set to off, I do.

I have the “Enable AI review” setting disabled but am still seeing AI suggestions.

But stepping back, IMO this is something that should be toggleable within each review. It’s useful to be able to think about a position without AI, then turn the AI on to check. Or to be able to see an AI suggestion, and then explore the suggestion without AI to see if you can figure out the idea. I get that there’s a UX challenge with people disabling AI without realizing it, but I think removing the ability to disable AI within a review or demo board isn’t the best solution.

I seem to have a bug where the conditional move icon (double arrow) superimposes with the chat icon (speech bubble).

What browser is that @ArsenLapin1 ?

Lacking a go back to first move button sucks since every other server has it.

Estimate score is inconvenient to get to, and after using it the score number being above the profile pictures is unintuitive - should be below the pictures somewhere like before

For me it is associated with whether Enable AI Review is on. Like you I would like to be able to turn it off.

This seems like a really silly complaint when OP is the lead developer politely asking for commentary on potential changes.
