Have you tried using the move slider, do you find it hard to jump back to the beginning of the game with it?
Works fine but valid only if ogs is the only server I use for muscle memory. Lacking the << >> jump feature creates user experience friction with most if not every other go server. It’s muscle memory people have had for decades
Buttons are also better than a slider for accessibility, people without a mouse but keyboard only, dictation etc.
FWIW the ‘home’ key takes you to the start, end to the end, page up and page down for forward/back 10.
This creates a lot of friction for the common use case of turning it on and off situationally. This is a bad choice in my opinion because i turn it off and on in reviews and when kibitzing and such. Having a clear toggle in the UI is really needed imo.
Ok fair enough, I’ll put it under the quick settings, we’ll see if it’s a continued problem for others there.
@anoek It should be more clear in which coordinate AI would play
Currently especially in % mode there are too many blue circles
![]()
I guess blue circle without big 0 in the center is the coordinate AI would play
But I thought when AI and user choose the same move it displayed as little blue circle with !!
so which one is truly AI move?
O16 or P16?
I don’t understand.
the main thing I need to know is where AI would move, not just estimate of score or %
Ooff I feel this on a personal level. xD Big update and people hating on it. I can’t say whether the changes are good or bad but hang it there @anoek
Just goes with the territory ![]()
well i feel a little lost, but i think i will adapt myself to it. maybe some shortcut keys would feel good. Show/hide IA analysis, Score Estimation, and previous/next ten moves.
A lot of good changes for mobile imo, but I definitely miss the button to skip back to the start of the game and I’d like a way to disable the !/?/!! etc on the stones. It’s an interesting idea, but we already have point loss so for me it’s more distracting than useful.
This UI is not good. Not in a “I don’t like it when things are different” way. It looks overcrowded and also missing useful features at the same time. Score estimation in review is perhaps not working (clicking ‘score’ doesn’t show anything that I can see), the icons are not clear in what they mean, the forward/backward steppers to go through game moves are detached from the game tree UI. Full screen, formerly Zen mode, has strange empty space between the game and the clock.
The coordinates options in a drop down instead of a sequence is an improvement.
A slider isn’t better. Game state isn’t like volume where you only care about the relative difference. The buttons for moving ahead or back by one move, by a larger jump, or going to the start or the end were much more convenient in every way.
I will start off by saying there are some things that I like about the change and that I appreciate that you are responding to feedback.
- I like the fact that it’s easier to tell whose turn it is.
- I also like the fact that if I wanted to I could change the settings in the same tab, when I was just starting to play I used to switch tabs to change the visual and audio settings to get things right.
I also don’t mind if it’s buggy at first because updates come with bugs.
But, I think for me after playing a few games there is a bit of frustration with some of the intentional design choices, I used OGS because they had zen mode and it was not distracting/it got out of the way when I played games, and furthermore I could just say “glhf” and click “zen mode” on the sidebar, play the game with no distracting clutter on the side, and then when I was done, there was a faded “Z” at the top right that I could click to go back and access all the functionality of OGS again. I think the sidebar was a really awesome display of the functionality of OGS and now all of that is hidden, but also when I’m actually trying to focus on the game the buttons are still present in a way that I find distracting, I would like to have the following:
- A keyboard shortcut for zen mode (Z for zen, maybe) or a one-click option perhaps.
- When I’m in zen mode (or, “fullscreen” as it is now called, but I’m not picky about the name), the only button I really want is one at the top right that exits zen mode like on the old UI, and I want it to behave like the old zen mode when I’m actually in it.
All that being said, I just want to play go without the UI getting in the way and I feel like it was easier for me to do that with the old UI.
I have not tried any of the analysis features. I know of some friends that have frustrations that other menu elements are hidden behind the menu instead of out in the sidebar as well particularly when they play correspondence games, like planning conditional moves. They don’t use the forum but I figured I would share their comments here as well.
The ticking clock is extremely distracting. Don’t we already know whose turn it is? Currently:
- browser tab title says whose turn it is
- timer counts down for current player
- circle indicates previous move
- sound plays when a stone is played
- sound can play to count down when you have X seconds left
- a number can show on the next tentative move to show there are X seconds left
Does anyone find the clock necessary? How about making it opt-in?

Would it make sense to revert the UI update and overthink it again? I’ve seen noone who likes it honestly. It differs from an normal online rage if you understand what I mean.
There are some people who genuinely like this update, but they are seemingly in the minority at least for now. If developers truly believe in their work, a potential solution is creating two versions of the UI that users can switch between them in the settings. This way everybody will be happy.
For me it is unplayable - it’s either submit move button or player names and remaining time.
And that useless slider just below the submit move button is placed there just to be accidentally touched once every 3 moves :))
Not to keep piling on, but the phantom ‘next move’ stones in review mode are not helpful to me.
Seeing the stone on the board — even with transparency and an indicator — but the AI evaluation showing the score for the board state where the move has not yet been played is very confusing.
The red double question mark icon on moves in review mode is very judgy. I don’t care for it. I can see the point loss already, I don’t need additional shame.
