Upcoming interface changes to the Game page and AI reviews

I’m not against revamps in principle but this does not work at for me at all – especially on mobile!

I can only presume anoek forgot about submit move mode when designing this layout for mobile!

I agree the always present floating top banner is an unnecessary waste of space. Also when playing you don’t need the move slider always visible, it’s not important to playing. Also dangerous to misclick on in a blitz.

The capture number in the player cards with no suffix to tell you it’s captures is confusing, particular if komi isn’t an obvious komi number to let you deduce its meaning from the white one.

I’ve updated it so the move quality is based on both the win rate and the score now, which should help when viewing end games using either

still:

I don’ understand why commonlly used things have to be changed when they’re working fine to begin with. Now, I have to learn an all new game interface instead of just playing Go.

Didn’t the player cards used to be side by side, each half screen width? Now being full width (with lots of blank space, though would be a little less once “captures” suffix added) and one above and one below the board I found it harder to keep track of both clocks in a blitz.

(on mobile)

Also agree the next move stone in review is annoying, I want to think about the position and read without it polluting my thoughts.

I agree it’s unnecessary in a live game. Maybe in a correspondence or when undo in progress might be more useful? I recall some previous thread of confusion about whose move during undo procedure, but I thought the changes to improve that in the old layout made it clear enough.

Just some feedback after playing and reviewing with students. It took me a while to find the review button.

This icon is a refresh icon. So it wasn’t obvious this was for review. I think it should be a different icon.

This was a thought I had for a review Icon but meh. Whatever you think is best. But I would make sure whatever icon you pick it doesn’t already have a meaning.

I would also put tiny text under it so those on ipads and tablets that cannot mouse hover can know what the button does. For example, this is what I do for my app on mobile.

In my opinion I think the navigation bar shouldn’t even be visible during a game. But some people will absolutely complain if they cant look back through the moves during play. The question is would it be worth the complaints or not?

image

This icon is the wrong icon for navigating one move at a time. This icon means to go to the start of the game not just one move back. You want the icon without the line | and just the arrow.

On IPad and mobile this icon has a nice little animation to slide up the chat window.

image

But when you close it the chat just jumps down instead of doing a smooth down animation to match.

On IPad The board ratio to screen size pushes white down too much.

My suggestion is to put white and black on the same row. like this.

The clock icon that ticks when it is your turn sounds good in theory, but it was distracting when I was trying to play to have movement in my peripheral vision. I would prefer nothing until the time is low. Then blinking or beeping is fine to let me know I’m low on time.

Hope this is helpful feedback

Thanks for your efforts but really really do not like the new UI. Please give an option to revert back to the old one. Specially dislike the clock and the font.

players who play as white on mobile will often timeout

Yes, that’s the downside of icons with no text labels, and no hover tooltips on mobile. So you just have to be adventurous and click them and hope there’s a confirm dialog before something major happens.

Well,i did post after using on desktop.

Now i am on mobile.

Translucent next move is annoying, very very.

Navigation via slider is awkward. previous navigation ui was fine

@anoek

maybe put white player above and black below for user who plays as white?
Then “your move” line would make more sense. But better to also just remove it on mobile.

Hi, I overall find the new UI quite nice to look at. Don’t have the opinion on the mobile experience yet, but I must say that the triange “phantom move” that’s about to be played is really confusing, I’m so used to scrolling board states and looking at lines based on what I see (and the phantom move really looks just like a move, at a glance indistinguishable from the rest of the board), that it just throws me off. I wish it was a toggle to have it on/off, at least in the settings.

EDIT: I found ‘variation stone opacity’ but it affects the entire AI line, not just that move about to be played. IIRC it used to have a different border or some other feature that made it stand out from other proposed lines, and I don’t recall it showing it up in places other than key moves.

you can turn that off under “More options” under the settings if you’d like

green dot and flag on mobile avatar are too in the center, they should be in the corners

Please add a setting to use the old formatting.

Zen mode missing is why I came to this thread. There’s a lot that seems inconvenient about the changes rn, but I could take time to adjust if only I knew how to go back into zen mode.

In the previous interface, when reviewing a game on my phone I could see the board and the score chart at the same time, so I could track who is winning in that position. Now I can see either the board or the score chart. Can there be an option to go back to the previous interface please?

Hello, here are my grievances:

  1. Please add an option to remove the “phantom” next move stone, as people have mentioned.
  2. Please add an option to remove the indicator underneath the active stone, i.e. these: ! !! + - ? ??
  3. I figured out how to remove the number of visits shown, so all good there.
  4. I didn’t see anyone mention this. The “Last move opacity” slider in the options, even when turned up to the maximum, still shows a dimmer circle than before the update. I didn’t think it would bother me, but sometimes I have trouble finding the last move because of this.
  5. There’s a previous move and a next move button, but the ‘go back to the beginning’ button is gone. If you don’t add it back in, that’s fine. I understand, but I will miss it.
  6. The toggle to “Enable AI Review” turns on/off both the markups on the board and the graph. Would it be possible to split these options so that I could have the graph but not the markups and vice versa? I know this was the same before the update, but since I’m typing here now anyway I am mentioning it.

I review hundreds of games here, and it has been a great tool for me. I hope I can keep using it in the future. I like the new slider; it is good. Thanks for listening.
