I recently attended a conflict management workshop, where one key takeaway was learning to identify triggers in people and prevent them.
Putting aside whether we will try to prevent them or not, I thought it would be interesting to share our triggers and to see how many of us are triggered by the same things.
So, what are your Go-related triggers? What are some of the things that irritate you or make you frustrated, sometimes even to the point of tilting?
It’s one thing to misclick and then immediately ask for an undo. It’s another thing when it’s my turn, I’ve been thinking for 30 seconds, and in that time you’ve found a mistake/better move and ask for an undo.
I don’t do it myself, but I’d say that is a rengo-specific strategy and part of the charm of it.
Do you also object to communication codes, like: low means something, high means something else? Do you object only when they’re secret, or even when they’re disclosed and discussed before the game?
As far as I am concerned Go is the ultimate anger/conflict management teaching tool.
One of the few things that can annoy me, in general, is making mistakes.
You cannot avoid making mistakes or suboptimal moves in Go, even if you are a pro, therefore you have to constantly face your mistakes and, eventually, calm down and come to terms with them.
Other than that, the only thing that annoys me is when I am between two moves and then I decide to play one and immediately realise that now that I can see the stone on the board, my mind now is certain that the other move was actually better. Yeah, thanks, good timing. What am I supposed to do with that now?
