Looks similar?
This one looks sus, no way of contacting the devs, the app itself doesn’t have basic features
it seems 3 Indian dudes(well their names are Indian could be NRIs) made it.
I am not gonna be impressed by another server with a “modern UI” or with “added features” or “showcase games”. Variant based servers so far are the coolest. Otherwise, if a place wants to impress me besides userbase, drop me some hot dang merch. Perhaps a shirt one could wear while playing, a tote bag to carry go equipment, pillows of stones for home decor, stickers to place around.
If it ain’t Libre, it ain’t Lichess…
Anybody still playing here?
I visited a few times recently but there were no active games and very few people were online.
I think it wasn’t succesful in moving the player base.
But I really respect the creator for the effort.
It’s not easy to get a player base to move, if it was, more people might move from fox to OGS ![]()
I think if you register to a sight and nobody is playing games, you probably only give it a few more tries before stopping checking altogether, so really you’d need some strong marketing and a big launch day or something to get a proper player boom where lots of games are being played immediately.
I respect anyone who by his efforts is pushing OGS to be even better.
I think the effort it takes to move people from A to B must have been seriously underestimated.
It’s great that that developers exist out there that can put together a really nice client server application, but it’s also bad that they kind of waste their time in doing so. Population wise, OGS got to what it is today by taking over a really nice correspondence server. It brought with it new features, that kind of usurped what KGS could do. But it still feels to me to be badly developed in comparison - The score estimator is a joke, the editor has features that make it look like a 4 year old built it, the rating system is still presented strangely, the use of space in the UI is not well thought out, blah blah …
Wouldn’t it be nice if somebody took the new features that you find in these servers and integrate them into an existing system like OGS. But no, that kind of cooperation doesn’t happen.
Which is intentional, at least we the community rejected a much better score estimator.
The problem is that you need a bad score estimator not to give players an advantage from using it, but a good enough one to make people feel happy if it’s enabled and they use it.
Maybe we can consider expanding this in another thread if we want to improve it.
Like the mostly cosmetic ratings table or just the numbers involved like rating deviation etc?
I think the more specifics you can point out, the more chance it can be changed. The frontend is open source and @blindgorgon is very much interested in improving the UI/UX overall.
But I think cooperation involves both sides. I think the knee jerk reaction of some people is “I can do better” and so they start a new project, rather than finding out how they could contribute to the existing server. Instead of developing a new app they could ask “how can I contribute, which parts are open source (front end), and which parts would require discussion to change, or backend support” etc.
The thing is, there’s nothing even really stopping anyone making an additional client to OGS. A bunch of apps, the mobile apps, steam games connect to OGS for matchmaking already.
Did OGS take over a correspondence server? DGS was the only correspondence server that I played before OGS and I think it’s still around.
Don’t make OGS responsible of the lack of development of KGS. To my knowledge KGS is supported now by the AGA so maybe contact them?
No more after the game is finished. You have then automatically a very good estimator based on katago. The weak one available during the game was the final decision after some debates with us users in the forum, a good score estimator being considered as too much helpful.
I don’t use myself SE during a game
You’re welcome to make things better on OGS. We have many suggestions, but not that many people implied in programming (especially for the UI)
Well, you had two things OGS and Nova Go Server, and Nova basically bought out OGS. If I misremember, please tie me up and dip me in a volcano head first.
Cooperation certainly involves both sides. I think it is probably just human nature that instead of working together, we prefer to create something new. I wonder what will happen to the server that Flavien Aubelle has in the works. It is seemingly in its beta phase right now, will it be launched and then die a death after a few months. Will it succeed and kill off a few other servers?
Groin, this is a bit off topic, but really I don’t understand the group think there. The main use of a score estimator is what
- for a player to cheat during the game
- for a player to check the score when the game’s finished
- for an observer to check the score
You seem to argue for the first two rather than the last.
Me neither but well it seemed that even being very bad some of the users wanted to not being removed. With a search you may find this topic and bring your own contribution
Btw general rant are not so fruitful, IMHO you bring interesting points of views which would attract more interest if splitted in different topics if you wish improvements.
If you had a good score estimator for an observer a player could just open a private window, copy and paste the URL, and then the player has access.
In fact I think the good estimator is the one used by observers during a game.
About cheating there are sadly many opportunities you can’t fight with. QoL is essential too.
Interesting, I wasn’t aware of this
