More like a national disaster as a result of Boris and his party’s programs of austerity and defunding the NHS over the last decade.
Only if you want to ignore that people in Scotland overwhelmingly voted for a progressive SNP Scottish government, overwhelmingly rejected the current right wing Tory government, and a nearly two-thirds majority voted against Brexit: When you write “UK” here, what you really mean is “England”.
To return to the topic of this thread, I am considerably more worried about coronavirus as a result of previous Tory party policies which have crippled our public institutions, and the current Tory government’s botched response to this crisis. Their slow response and policy of “herd immunity” has needlessly condemned thousands of people across the British Isles to death.
And if you had bothered to read what I been posting in this thread then you’d know that I’m no fan of Brexit, the Tories and their decade of lost opportunity and austerity or their shambolic response to this pandemic.
The thing I find most scary about coronavirus at the moment is the US response to it.
It’s most scary because regrettably what happens in the US gets picked up later here in Australia.
“screw you, I’m alright Jack, you should have worked harder or been born better” is an even more scary disease than covid-19 It literally can end our way of life.
It’s another manifestation of the idea behind “there are no great men”.
In this case it’s not so much that the person was “forced to meet a challenge” but rather that a gaping opportunity presented, and it was inevitable that someone worked it out and stepped in to take advantage of it. Trump os just the person who’s personality disorders enabled him to act on the opportunity more audaciously than anyone would have believed possible.
The gaping opportunity is that provided by the culture of “individual freedoms over everything” and corporate media control combined to create. An unprecedented opportunity to manipulate people into having their own weaknesses and greed support apparently crazy notions.
In this case it’s not so much that the person was “forced to meet a challenge” but rather that a gaping opportunity presented
In a lighter comment only two words come to my mind ever since that person run for office: Zaphod Beeblebrox ( he is a character from the “Hitchhicker’s guide to the galaxy” for those who have not read the book)
Think about it:
You have no idea which head of his will speak, just like Zaphod
He is there to create a distracting show instead of actually rule, just like Zaphod
I quote: " As a character, Zaphod is hedonistic and irresponsible, narcissistic almost to the point of solipsism, and often extremely insensitive to the feelings of those around him"
Most of Zaphod’s actions eventually are revealed to have ulterior motives for his own gain
And part of Zaphod’s brain is sealed. I rest my case
I also find it (I can’t find a polite word) that the only thing about covid that seems to get any traction in US is “find a country to bomb”. People are dying in the tenths of thousands and the important thing is to punish China and WHO?? Really?? I really can’t take another round of “angry America lashing out”.
Today is Easter, last night we went out in our balconies to celebrate
Of course lots of people broke rules and went outside and to churches, but also lots of people stayed inside.
Easter Sunday is maybe the most social celebration in Greece. A police car just passed by asking people to stay inside. It’s a huge bet to see if people can fight the natural instinct to gather today. I hope we do the sensible thing (but I’m not so confident).
If only Trump’s really mission were to hand over control of the Universe to someone qualified to make the decisions, as Zaphod’s turned out to be … well, wouldn’t that be wonderful…
Ah, and so it begins. The race of who will be the first to give hope:
The comments underneath the study are VERY interesting. On a non-mathematical level, a study that found its participants via facebook ads in a county that testing was hard to find and was already under prevention measures is going to receive a lot of negative peer reviews.
