Pine Trees - Detail Three
(My favourite I think)
The Pine Trees screen (松林図 屏風, Shōrin-zu byōbu ) is a pair of 16th century six-panel folding screens ( byōbu ) by the Japanese artist Hasegawa Tōhaku .

shouldn’t the star points be star squares?

Meh, I guess, but I’m too lazy.
I should also probably trim off a few pixels on the edges to improve the alignment, but, hey! wabi-sabi!

Star points could also be squares with a different colour. As in traditional board, they will be hidden by stones played on them.
@Lys gave me a very terrible idea:
link to 15x15 board image , use RGB 166,162,130 for the lines
link to original source of board image in case anyone wants to try making different sizes

A new variant. Chinese rules, and stones on special tiles gets the bonus score.
double/triple letter -> double/triple stone score
double/triple word -> double/triple group score

Minor omission in the rules: The first move should be on tengen, like in Scrabble.

Maybe it could be a Scrabble variant where you try to surround and capture each other’s words?

That looks like an awesome idea for a new game.
Learning words and positions at the same time… each different games can have different scrabble.
Interestingly, ancient Go precursor game might share some similarity to this. Surround and capture different spots or starting fixed stone placement yield different points. This relic rules still exists in Tibetan Go.

I think you should be able to start a new word from any of the star points instead of the center, and then only attach new words to your own colour, not your opponents.
