Now that we support custom board backgrounds, I thought it might be nice to share your favorite boards so others can also try them out. The tutorial on how to change your goban background is here.
To keep the thread readable I would suggest:
⬤ Be sensible, and only share backgrounds you really think are nice
⬤ Make the thumbnails small (hover over the preview and chose 50%)
⬤ Share the link to the image in a code field like this - select the link and click the following icon in the top of the text editor
Let’s keep this only as a library so people can browse for ideas without needless chit-chat. For any related questions, please use the thread linked at the top of the page.
Based on Shorin-zu Byobu (Pine Trees), a 16th century painting by Hasegawa Tohaku, again with a slight fade applied. I’m actually gonna use this one for a bit.
On this one I removed the interpanel lines because they conflicted with the lines on the board overlay. Interestingly, like this you can still sort of see them but in a much more faded way, due to the shading difference on each panel.
As a note to this one, it tends to zoom in to the left zide of the image. And as a personal note, turn the text and lines to a dark blue, it feels more natural to my eyes, so perhaps that would be good for everyone else too.
Just tried this out, looks pretty good. Its the album art from a MONO album, with the color range reduced some and with a sepia tone so the stones stand out better, was too hard to see them against black and white
Two halves of a calligraphic scroll by Honami Koetsu.
Actually, the resolution on these is too small to look good on a large monitor. That’s a shame. They look so much like the covers of depressing indie goth albums…
This one, taken from M. C. Escher’s Application of Gestalt Psychology is very low-res but its simple shapes and monocolour might stand up. Conclusion: the texture stands up fairly decently but you can’t see the rows and columns. Might work if the grey parts recoloured into a sort of blue, perhaps.

I don’t know how reliably i will be able to host the image, so… if you want to use this background reliably i reccomend cropping the original and lowering its contrast, while upping the brightness yourself.
I love the images you are posting.
I don’t know if they all fit the purpose. For a board background you want low-contrast images that don’t fight against grid and stones.
I love Escher but I wouldn’t even try this on the board.

I’m still fiddling with the colors of the stones/lines to get something I’m satisfied with, but I like the vibe of this background gif. This gif might be a little dark for using anything but custom color stones, but I think this looks pretty and is relatively soft on the eyes so I thought I’d share.
Current color hex codes are FDD8FC for the lines, E283A0 for the white stones, and 1D0F1F for the black stones.
