Playing Go IRL pictures

In France the biggest go school for children is in Rennes, it has 75 players (61 U12, 10 U16 and 4 U20), among which 9 are 15k or stronger, the strongest player being 7k. The main teacher is Kevin Cuello 1k.

A video is available on YouTube

You can see that the teacher and the children bow at the beginning of the course. The other adult on the video is Dominique Cornuejols, I guess she was visiting the club when the video was made since she usually teaches in the Grenoble go school.

That’s quite amazing!
Interesting to see their approach of connecting go to traditional Japanese martial arts culture. The atmosphere, rituals and dress make it look and feel like a judo or karate class. The playing material also looks very nice. They must have invested quite a bit of money and effort into this youth club. I suppose that several adults are involved in running this club, or it must be that Kevin is doing this as his full-time job? Even the video production itself looks quite professional.
It all looks a lot more organised than in Baarle, but I guess it needs to be with such a large number of players.

I’ve spoken with Dominique several times about youth go. She’s an incredibly nice and approachable person and I’m sure she has been a great asset for many years for the Grenoble go school and go promotion in general, in France and Europe as a whole. Also we have played 1 tournament game in 2017, which she won.

I don’t know details about how the club is managed, the web page
only mentions Kevin as teacher. It says

Which seems to imply that most of his activities are more or less related to go.

His classes take place at the Confucius Institute, so perhaps he gets support from them.

I’m on vacation with my partner, and we played go on the Lewes-Cape May ferry!! Which means I got to decorate my goban with a new sticker

we have about a 10-stone rank difference, but we played no-handicap no-komi and she played really well. I won by just 7 points, and i only gave her 2 take-backs!

coming up on the cape may lighthouse:

and the new sticker!!

It turns out ferries are neat. Highly recommend!!

Back in 1979 (I think), I and one of my close friends from high school drove to Cape May to visit his grandmother for the weekend. Coming back, we took that ferry and played chess on it at one of those tables. A very scenic ride; yes, highly recommended.

When I was married, our family went to Cape May in September for the bird migration, a well-known event there. Unfortunately, it was something of a bust that year, but we spent time driving around looking at the beautiful architecture and a couple lighthouses.

Went to the Pasadena Go Club last night, for the second time in five years! Apparently yesterday was a record turnout, with up to 16 people at one point.

I (10k) played this nailbiter game against a 6k:

Elsewhere, people played a 31 x 31 rengo:

Jolly good fun!

It’s a gymnasium that does have some natural light not visible in the picture, but yeah mostly artificial.

Did I ever tell of the games under my roof when all Go club members (when the club still existed, before Covid-19) were smokers?

Imagine the many possible permutations:

  • hands/fingers

  • Go bowls

  • Go bowl lids

  • bowls with Japanese rice crackers

  • Go stones

  • mouths

  • coffee/tea mugs

  • Go board

  • cigarette ashes

  • ashtrays

It wasn’t always pretty, I tell you! :downcast_face_with_sweat:

Later we forbade smoking in our “Go salon”. But some not so pretty permutations still happened

Looking back in similar context some permutations did happen but that was still not very often. In some way you get trained to not doing it.
