Heâd get bored of chess.
He could reach 6k
I would think he would reach 1d in a year, because isnât that very rare but not unheard of, and presumably one of if not the best chess player in the world would be self-selected for the type of person whoâs good at learning that sort of thing
I dunno. Nothing granted even if obviously one may think like you.
If he gives up chess, put full time studies and get some good reviews of his games I will guarantee something around highest kyus only.
6k if he commit himself in just regularly playing and some studies like a common ama player.
Chess GMs Alexander Morozevich (top chess Elo 2788 in 2008) and Tiger Hillarp Persson (top chess Elo 2618 in 2009) are both dan players in go, but AFAIK they both needed several years to reach it.
Part of the reason is probably that they are chess professionals, so their âday jobâ requires them to spend significant time on chess to keep up. If Magnus Carlsen would give up chess to reach dan level in go as fast as possible, he might be faster than them, but I suppose quitting chess would be a huge sacrifice for him.
They are fundamentally different games. While Go is often cited as being more complex, as a low-dan Go player, Iâve personally found chess more difficult to learn. Talent in one doesnât necessarily translate to the other.
Thatâs the same as asking what would happen if Shin Jinseo seriously studied chess
Michael Jordan failed as a AA baseball player. No guarantees either way, imo.
The title of the thread says âseriously studiedâ.
I think 6k is underestimate. With serious study as Iâm sure Carlsen is capable of, heâd be closer to dan in a year.
Well itâs all about how you understand the title. Seriously is not intensively, I gave my opinion on this already.
M. Carlsen is no more a child, and go is not chess. Dan in a year often leads to a high dan level some years later and there are no proof at all he would be on this way.
He will question his whole life.
âwhy I found chess first, not Go.. oh God. this board game so fu**in interestingâ
I think most people could reach dan in a year, with enough time + motivation, and Magnus Carlsen is surely not like most people.
Very much likely he would never punch any table nor have to say sorry to his counterpart ever again.
If Magnus Carlsen would study go seriously for a few years, I expect that his chess style would change too. Maybe his strategy would become more all board orientated; more little skirmishes instead of a head on collision in the centre.
Most? Not at all. The most talented, giving most of their time. passionate ones. These at the end of the year will stay a few months, one more year maybe almost dan. Even future national champions. Thatâs what I observed. And M Carlsen is no more 7yrs old and hasnât proved anything in the go world.
We maybe now are going to slip into the âwhat is one danâ endless discussion, lol. I define it myself as the level you get after the 1k step in which player spend at least half, more commonly the same time it took to reach that level (from the very beginning). Players then rise quickly to the next step at 3d. EGF/OGS seems to be the most following these rankings.
I think itâs significantly more likely Magnus would reach 1d in a year than the average Joe, but still far from certain.
probably because he didnât take it personally
Ke Jie slaps himself and throws stones in the air.
So yes, Magnus Carlsen very much likely would never punch any table. He might just punch the Go bowl.
- 3 months (1/4 year) into daily Go practice, and I punched the table, and later on, did have to say âI am sorryâ to my supervisor!!!
Somehow, it was carefully PLANNED to take place, amid a hectic meeting, with Human Resources as the third party!
- So the challenge/key point here is how to cope with rage/anger/disappointment/failure, the WeiQi/iGo style, right?
What would you think if Carlsen would have slapped himself and thrown his bow of stones, instead?
(The conditions here = 1 year of seriously studying Go).
