"I remember..." game

I’ve heard about when Cho Chikin stole the tea from the official.

I haven’t been able to pin the exact date, but it’s some time in 2016 as far as I can tell.

Edit: note, it’s an interesting pass-time to try to find out what game that was, and when. I was unable (Nick infuriatingly doesn’t mention the year).

Nick reviewed that game last year:

I’ll sacrifice some points here and go backwards (forwards?) a bit.

I remember the Future of Go Summit of May 2017, aka the Ke Jie vs AlphaGo match. It was a three-game match held in one of the “Venices of the East”, Wuzhen, China, with a couple of other events thrown in.

As history records, AlphaGo won all three games.

I think “remember” trumps “heard about” anyhow.

… in which case I’m allowed to suddenly remember something in 2017 also

I still really strongly remember when Nick was having his existential crisis after the emergence of AlphaGo .

“Everything I have taught you is wrong”.

I also remember OGS starting to come to drips with AI play, notably 3-3 invasion, at that same time (and that video was mentioned in that thread, so it’s kind of the same memory).

(OK I cop a couple of months negative points, but it was worth it).

When did AlphaGo Teach come out? Was that late in '17?

That game seems to have been played on January 18, 2015.

I remember when Ryan Li 1p beat Chen Yaoye 9p in a tournament game (June 21, 2017).

(I hope this is right. I’m counting from @GreenAsJade’s June 29, 2017 post above. @bugcat posted something from May 2017 just before that, however.)

My first games on this account were in January of 2017, but I don’t want to jump quite that far back.

I remember when I first became SDK, because it was as a result of the 2017 rank bump, so I will have that if the timing is appropriate. I think it may have been too late in the year, though.

I also remember the death of Sugiuchi Masao, the oldest ever active professional, at 97 years old. That was in November of the year, though, which really would be jumping in the wrong direction.

I think it was also in 2017 that I first began editing on Sensei’s Library, but I’m not sure when it was. Probably was in the first half of the year, but the month eludes me.

I possibly founded the Tearoom Classical Pro Study Group Play Go at online-go.com! | OGS in 2017, but if I did then I think it was late in the year, and its foundation might have even been the year after.

Your rating peaked on May 16, 2017, so let’s go from then.

I remember when Google Deepmind announced the Future of Go Summit (April 10, 2017) that ultimately led to this classic photo:

One thing I definitely remember is the formation of AgentNeigh’s study group, for which AgentNeigh regularly paid for lectures and special screenings of Go films.

The original group seems to have been deleted at some point, but its legacy was to fuse with the young Open Study Room, which was just making its way over from KGS. The “Neighsic Study Group”, as a vague memory tells me it was called, was instrumental in bringing many OGS players into OSR, creating an active community with long-term stability that’s lasted through to today.

Still, as with many of my memories I don’t remember exactly when it happened.

You just missed it! According to @AgentNeigh’s profile, AgentNeigh started playing Go on May 21st.

Ah! It’s perfect timing for me to cite the release of The Surrounding Game on April 3rd!

And I remember when KGS was sold the day before!

One thing we missed (which I won’t go back for) is the start of the Images of Olden Times and Images of Newer Times threads, both in October 2017.

I remember when AlphaGo Master played its sixty games against professionals on Tygem and Fox, from December 2016 to January 2017 (we’ll take the ending date).

See Redmond’s AlphaGo vs the World series.

I remember when GoGameGuru.com “went back to its roots” and closed its Go shop (Dec. 12, 2016).

GoGameGuru going back to its roots. The Go shop is no more. • Life In 19x19

Of course, we couldn’t imagine that those “roots” would involve losing its domain name and becoming an online casino, but such is life.

The “big one” was in March. Can we fit a few more in before going back that far?

What do we remember from April – November 2016?

I have a feeling that this was the time when Waltheri (ps.waltheri.net) was created, based on the order in which the games display. From about 2016 on, they display in date order, but earlier games are in upload order, which is not playing date-chronological. But I won’t cite this, because I don’t remember Waltheri’s creation.

Aha! I think I remember Ke Jie’s victory in the 2016 Bailing Cup, which was in September.

As I recall, that was his debut as a really top player.

Anyone want to do the next instalment? September 2016 is on the board.

You still got to go back a couple more years before I get to play.

Edit: Last thing I remember before I had quit was the Gu Li vs Lee Sedol jubango it was such a big deal I remember. I had stopped playing before that but, I remember hearing about it and checking the games.
