To resign or not. That is the question.
Resigning or continuing to play on is a subject that keeps returning on the forums.
Downhere you see just a few topics dealing with resignation, but there are more (many more).
I’m starting to resign a lot more lately (connected to my losing streak)… even when it turns out I am ahead in retrospect. When is it an acceptable time to resign?
I realize that this is a broad question. However, I find that I tend to keep fighting in games when my opponent can clearly read that I should resign. Does any higher kyu or dan have advice for a general rule of when a lower kyu should resign a game when he is not sure it is completely lost due to lack of reading ability?
I don’t want to continue to waste players time. I, also, don’t want to give up on a game where I have a chance ( and, could learn valuable lessons.)
Thank you for your time a…
This was in the recent BAGPA Tournament in San Francisco.
I played Black and I left White’s name anonymous. We were both AGA 8kyu players (which roughly equals an OGS 12 kyu, hence why I call both of us 12 kyu in the review)
I was a bit miffed about having lost the five stones towards the center and letting my opponent have a big wall in a game where I had little actual territory (with the exception of the possibility of the top-right corner)
But a few score estimators said I wasn’t too far b…
I just finished a 9x9 game and was wondering if black should have resigned instead of passed as he did. When black passed, I passed also, the scoring system was okay concerning points, but I had a kind of feeling that resign might have been more correct.
On the other hand, I think black couldn’t make any living shape, so could you argue that the borders were closed?
So is was it 100% clear that pass was the right choice, or would resign have been more correct. Might there be a grey zone betwee…
I’m not really sure when I should pass and when I should resign (both to play the game correctly and be respectful of my opponent, regardless of rank).
Could someone please clarify?
Hi, I’ve been wondering if there’s some kind of ethical code about when to resign.
It happened to me a couple times now that I made a big mistake and kept playing, and sometimes there came unpleassant results. For instance: the other player resigned. I really would have prefered them to say: “you already lost, can we end this please” or something like that, then I would have resigned.
Or another time, the other player just left the game, and let the time run out. I waited to the last second, a…
Just before this resignation, I thought I was slightly or even way behind (the AI says I am wrong). I have only a few pockets of secure territory, a larger base on the left (not sure if he could monkey jump in) and a weak group on the right, while he has all four corners and a lot of potential in the centre.
This looked even to me (again, the AI says I am wrong). Despite my massive superiority on the left side, he has influence on most of the rest of the board (and was 5 kyu stronger at time …
It seems that despite the many threads it is still not clear for a lot of players when to resign. The Documentation and FAQ paragraph about how to end a game is not really helpful.
Maybe it would help if a condensation of these discussion/threads about resignation etiquette is implemented into the Documentation and FAQ paragraph about how to end a game?
